I was told that CA used to have pretty large forestry clean up battalions that did this work and that program was curtailed years ago.
Maybe FDR's WPA during the Depression? They built a lot of public works on federal land - bridges, culverts, erosion control, National Park infrastructure.

California's forests today are 57% Federal land, 3% State, the remainder privately held. Starting a forest cleanup effort would take federal leadership.

Well now the fog has joined the smog here and visibility is about 200ft. My sinuses are worse. Added a blue dot to Bruce's sat pic for my location.

We're doing better, upgraded to red or just unhealthy from very unhealthy.
Same here... a little better this afternoon. Doesn't appear there will be much improvement through at least Friday though.

I'm still doing OK here. Very light smoke etc at ground level. However - overhead it's still as thick as ever.

Bottom line is, if you don't maintain properly, at some point it goes up in smoke.... Lots of it. Talk about air pollution, there it is, in spades. You cannot have ot both ways. Either you practice proper forestry management, selective cutting for timber, dealing with deadfall and floor management or you play the tree hugger stuff and do nothing at it burns at some point. Sort of forced forestry management now. The other issue is, all the floor debris and invasive plant matter sucks up ground water and Kalifornia and surrounding states have a water issue anyway,.

Significantly better today and car was wet with dew this morning...

For decades anytime we had windfall oak people would line up to eagerly haul it away for firewood.

That all stopped about 30 years ago and wood burning now is not permitted on cold winter nights, new homes cannot have fireplaces and there is a bounty to remove existing... so wood just left to rot.

Wood burning bad, natural gas bad, oil furnaces bad...
