On a semi-related note... If you are building a dust collector you need to keep the velocity up, not just the CFM. A high velocity keeps the dust & dirt from falling out of the airflow & plugging the pipe. Not so much relevant to a fume extractor though.

Good points. To assure there's no confusion, dust collectors collect and store dust but alow micro particals to escape and become suspended in shop air.. My contraption capture's those micro size particals before they are inhaled.

Gene, hope you get back to your welding exhaust project soon.

If I install a 6" fan like your, I might try one of these 6" charcoal scrubber units for about $50 to test with a small amount of ducting.

That way I would be cleaning the fumes and exhausting the scrubbed air back in my garage space, this just might work for me as I only mig weld with gas, and tig weld.

You welding with stick generates a lot more fume smoke, I'd guess.

Here is a link to one of these 6" charcoal scrubbers:

Dragon, yeh that's 6".

Is something wrong with this site today, or is it just my connection? Strange. Anyways, here's how I routed it out the window. Hard to see I guess, that's a piece of plexiglass with a hole cut in it.

Indeed! Looks great. I was about to ask you how you were going to enclose the window opening. The plexiglass is so clear and clean. Had to take a closer look on this post. Well done.

How loud is the fan? You could always use a Harbor Freight dust collector and skip the collection bags and filter. I'm not sure about their smaller one but the larger one has a steel or aluminum impeller and steel housing. Both the 1hp and 2hp use induction motors so they are a lot quieter than a universal motor. You would also get a lot more air flow, that might be good or bad. You could put a duct register on the end to spread out where it extracts the fumes from.

Yeh, they look real good when brand new. I'm kinda pissed though, I cracked it a little while sawing the hole in it, arggg! I was so trying to avoid that.

How loud is the fan?

Way quieter than the vacuum!
