I Need a Bigger Tractor

   / I Need a Bigger Tractor #31
I have 80 acres. Mixture of pine stands, open grass fields and 25 acres in two lakes. I upgraded to a M6040 about ten years ago. It's sure a whole lot easier to get any work done with the larger tractor. I mow nothing out beyond the lawn around my house. I leave it all for the local wildlife.

My M6040 is open station and hydraulic shuttle shift. With my HD Land Pride SGC1560 grapple, 1550# of RimGuard in the rear tires & 1050# Rhino rear blade, the tractor weighs - 10,100#. More than adequate weight & power to get any job done for me.

SDT - The PTO specs on a 10 foot Rhino is 25HP minimum. The L3901 PTO HP is 32, so it will pull the implement, but I do agree the L3901 is marginal for a 6 foot rotary cutter. Even though I have used the cutter for the past 4 months, I have had no issue with pulling it. My hills are not extreme, so that may be a factor. The MX6000 has 52 PTO HP, so it should be no problem to pull even a TS12 cutter (specs on this cutter require 35-50PTO HP).

As far as whether the Rhino cutters can be used with a Kubota, I am not sure. Obviously, something to consider and investigate. Thank you for your input..

Mower manufacturer's HP requirements are intended to sell mowers. Yes, it will pull it across a well kept golf course but not in what most of us consider "normal" rough cut conditions. It is also too light for use in steep conditions.

I use a HD 6' mounted cutter with my L6060 and, it's all she wants in many of the conditions that I mow. Stall guard (if on) will routinely reduce ground speed to zero in heavy cover.

Yes, my L6060 would pull a 12' BW but the going would be slow in many conditions and the PTO shaft is too close to the drawbar to allow use of the optional self leveling hitch on the LP cutter. I investigated this thoroughly before deciding to buy a 15' BW for use with my M9960.

City folk move to the country and mow and mow and mow, they want everything to look like a park! Then they go the zoo to see the animals!

Country folk don't mow and mow and mow, we like to see the animals in their natural setting! Then we go to the city to see parks!!!

Well, that pretty much sounds like me! When you've got wide open spaces of land, there is not much else to do at the moment. We're going to enlist the help of a wildlife habitat biologist to help us plan for proper land use so we're not mowing all the time. But, I am still going to have to get a bigger tractor...

A 15' batwing sure is nice to sneak under tree limbs without having to put the tractor under them. And there's nothing wrong with used equipment. Even if you're not comfortable making an assessment yourself, a hired mechanic, farmer, neighbor, etc that would check things over for you would be worth it. Remember this, bigger "commercial" machines and equipment that was built for 40 hours/week would have a wonderful retirement puttering around you field edges for? 20 hours a month?

You don't need a wildlife biologist, you just need to stop mowing! That the wildlife was doing just fine before you took their habitat away...

If I was you, I'd want a bigger tractor too, they are just so much nicer, and in many cases safer, to own than a little tractor on a bigger property.

If it was me I would wait until you've made a firm commitment on what you are going to do with the land. If it means cutting as much as you say I would move from the MX to an M, maybe in the 70 HP range. It might be a little large for things like a small garden but as long as you have open space around it you can still do it. Very few people say "Gee, I bought too big of a tractor". Personally I think I would try to find someone else who will cut it as you want it cut. However that may not be an option. If you are going to cut it at some point you may think about going the next step and bailing it. That's why I think an M series would be a better option. Sure you can do it with a smaller tractor but as you're finding out being close to the minimum HP requirements means going slower. Also with bailing extra weight is a good thing.

I get it, but I'm having a hard time just leaving things as they are. It looks nicer when its cut. Must be the "city boy" in me....
