My MIL was forced to sell a good bit of her land to the city for a lake, was told for a water supply. She got $90.50 an acre. The woman with the land next to her got over $2,000 an acre. One couple that refused to sell for the price was taken to court. The city took the land. Over the next 10 years they both died and the court case was dismissed and their kids got nothing. The land had an old mill on it that was over 150 years old. Most of the farm land and pasture around it has been purchased by real estate brokers. The land is reappraised each year with the taxes going up. When I am gone, my son will be forced to sale to pay the taxes. The creek that animals used to drink out of is no longer mine. I have to pay to pump water from it. If we build anything within a 100 feet of the water, we must have it surveyed to prove that we are not building on their land. If you dig out close to the lake they can them claim the land as it is below the flood level.
At what time does one lose their rights due to the voice of many? This is what is left of a family farm. We have to keep all the gates locked. We have had to call the police to remove people from our land. And we can tell stories about hunters all day. And it is not legal to discharge a firearm within 1 mile of this lake. We have people go thru our gates and past signs and pick everything from our fruit trees and sometimes our gardens. If you live in the county, the county sheriff is elected by everyone in the county, but does his job outside the city. But with the large population of the city, he is elected by the city. Because I am within 1 mile of the city limits., I pay city taxes, pay city permits and inspections, but receive no city services and get no vote for my taxes. No, I do not want the city people any closer to me. But I already know that I can not fight them. I just hope that I can out live part of them.
And there is talk about the city taking more land. Says it better suited for housing and will increase their tax revenue.
