Wow! That's an amazing little engine. Thanks for sharing it. How did you find it? Do you have any insights on how the flow is partitioned between filter and the bearings?

All the best,

Peter

I read a brochure on it several years ago and when I happened to see it on eBay I bought it immediately.
Very nice engine for a prepper.
I have not seen one since.
It is a bypass filter setup diverting excess oil thru filter providing the oil pressure is above the bypass pressure setting.
That is all I know about the filter setup.

I have a standard L60 that is a great engine, but your L70 is really nice.

I have a 186FA driven generator that started fading for lack of a better description. It has only 50hours on the engine.

It starts fine, hits 3600rpm, and then as it warms up, slowly the governor advances until the fuel lever is pinned against the excess fuel pin. Then the rpms start dropping. (2800rpm+/-) At the same time, there is an odor of unburned diesel in the air. The air filter seems clean, and cracking it doesn't change the speed. The valve clearances are on specification. The fuel tank is clean, ditto fuel filter, and the diesel runs fine in my tractor.

I recently had to replace the fuel pump due to a bad solenoid, and the soft hoses due to age (cracking/weeping).

I am thinking that I now have a partially clogged injector? (I am assuming that despite my efforts, some dirt got in somewhere.) Does this sound right? Replace? Attempt to clean? (If so, how?)

Advice, suggestions most welcome.

All the best,

Peter

Is this a new problem since you replaced the injection pump?
If not I would check or replace the injector first.
They are easy to disassemble. These are very precise parts when removing or inserting the plunger be gentle, it can get stuck if misaligned.
They are cheap and easy enough to replace.
Do not touch the precise surfaces with your hand moisture can corrode the surfaces.
Use only diesel fuel to re-assemble.

Thanks for the advice!
The engine ran fine for about eight hours after replacing the fuel pump. So, yes, a new problem, but not a "replaced the fuel pump and the trouble started" problem.
I will try to pull the injector today or tomorrow. If I have debris inside, I guess I am hoping it will be easy to rinse/blow out. I ordered a new injector, just in case. Thanks for the tip on not touching it with bare hands.

Do you have a trick for priming these? I have been pulling a vacuum on the return fuel line beyond the injector with a compressed air venturi.

All the best,

Peter

I would check flow to the injection pump and if necessary disassemble the injection pump also.
Could also be a clogged fuel filter in the tank.

To prime the system ensure fuel is on, move the throttle to maximum loosen the nut at the injector a 1/2 turn or so and crank the engine until fuel squirts out from nut.
Tighten nut and engine should start right up.

This is a really neat thread in the Yanmar forum.

Recently I came across a manual for Yanmar air-cooled diesel engines.

YANMAR AIR-COOLED DIESELS L50 L60 L90 PARTS MANUALS NPC-2706.PDF

See the attached. Hope it helps. ;)

All Greek to me

Actually all Japanese.

A person can take a page of the PDF, save it as an image, upload to this site to read in ENGLISH. Translate an image

That's what we've been doing with the Yanmar tractor manuals now.

We now have a Rosetta Stone.
