Torque wrenches

Exactly the same as the Pittsburg (HF) wrench, right down to the plastic case. Lots less at HF. Problem with cheap wrenches is, they only indicate in one direction.... right. Not left.

I see that.. I don't think they had one then. I know I checked before I bought this one. But at the time I bought this one, it was the cheapest I could find

I also have the very old style ( with pointer and scale) that measures the other way

Checked my two out one ok the other a Craftsman torque ok in one direction but ratchet broke so it won’t work opposite direction. Going to stop by Lowe’s and see if since it’s a mechanical failure not a torque issue if they will replace it under the craftsman lifetime warranty. Then going to look at the Harbor Freight “ICON” 1/2 in drive wrench . Anyone have experience with this unit.

I have two Craftsman torque wrenches. 3/8 and 1/2 drive. I keep both here in the house. Idea being - warm, dry and no exposure to dust or volcanic ash. They might last a tad longer and be a bit more accurate with this added care.

Just because they look the same means very little as the suppliers for HF just copy other tools. I have no clue about the Tekton T-wrench but it's made in Taiwan vs China. In general I find that Taiwan usually does a better job making stuff.

My beam type torque wrench has two scales at right angles to each other. So I can view it straight on or from the handle.

Using a torque wrench is probably better than not using one. But technically speaking when a torque value is specified, isn't that supposed to be measured with clean lightly oiled threads? Most of the time I think we just crank on it regardless of how gunked up or damaged the threads are. Not sure how much that would affect the actual torque value.

Yeah, I've wondered about that also. Not being a pro, I wonder if torque values are based on a new bolt (new thread) and a new "hole".....versus a cleaned up old bolt in an "used" machine. Sometimes I use a torque wrench anyway.....but sometimes I just put it all back "together" based on my "gut feeling".
