Out in the shop today and happened to examine my HUSKY air pig. Seam also near bottom but not at bottom.

Idiot probably never drained the condensate in the receiver and it failed. Receivers need to be drained daily when in use and if not, when shut off before the pressure drops to zero. Dorks are born every day... prime example in the video.

You didn't watch the follow up video then did you,,,,, and who the heck drains a tank every day and who the heck calls a tank a receiver, have you flipped your lid. I drain my vertical 60 gal tank two or three times a year, maybe a quart of water comes out, big deal little shuffle...........

I only skimmed the comments here, but did anyone notice that it looked like the drain was booger welded in? Not saying that's 100% what caused the failure, but the damage that heating the metal can cause, it could easily contribute.

DON'T WELD ON PRESSURE VESSELS.
Another one that didn't watch the follow up video, and further more air tanks all tanks are welded together to begin with.......

I love that the guy talks about forensic airplane crash investigation. Then flicks the pressure safety valve a couple of times and calls it good, ruling that out. Maybe a job awaits him at the NTSB.

I do, every evening when my employees go home and I shut off the screw compressor and drain the receiver, which is the proper name for the air containment vessel. Rest assured you 'tank' is rusting away inside on the bottom and at some point you will be unpleasantly surprised. Mine is a tad bigger than 60 gallon. More like 175 gallon. Bet you call an adjustable open end wrench a Crescent wrench as well......

DON'T WELD ON PRESSURE VESSELS.

Nice. Looks like a typical 'blow your nose' weld job too.

My compressor with TANK is 8 years old, I might be surprised if I outlast it. I won that bet, been calling it an adjustable wrench for the past 50 years and if it slips off there are a few other names...

I’m well aware of that fact. I did skim the follow-up and saw that it split on the seam. That wasn’t the point of my post.

Most homeowners aren’t good enough welders to understand what heat does to metal. I’m a decent welder but won’t touch a pressure vessel. If you’re a boilermaker, welder by trade, etc... have at it. Otherwise, I stand by my statement- Don’t weld on pressure vessels.

You’re free to disagree.

Clearly, that guy sucks at welding, I was just pointing out another potential point of failure is all. ;)

Who knows of a catastophic compressor tank failure? I know of none personally. With millions of consumer grade compressors out there, and probably many neglected, what does that tell you?

They are built to be abused?

I've heard of more tires exploding than tanks. But the advice in this thread is sound. The maintenance protocols are there for a reason even if neglecting them doesn't cause failure all that often, you're playing with your life or somebody else's life.
