The floor in our kitchen is not completely level, but it has be shored up so it won't get farther out of level.

We are going to use a vinyl plank flooring.

I want to get the floor as close to level as possible with self leveling concrete over the plywood sub floor.

However, some of the areas are going to require 5/8" of of additional material to bring them up to level.

This amount is going to be costly with just self leveling concrete.

Can I add another layer of either plywood or say concrete backer board to reduce the volume of self leveling concrete required to bring the low spot up to grade?

I’d guess if you had a laser level you could put pieces of plywood in the lowest spot and level up to it with the concrete?

Not 100% sure that is a good idea but I’m now subscribed to this thread!

I have a thread here from several years ago where I faced a similar issue. My problem was the subfloor settled but a beam underneath stayed put so I had a ridge running through the middle of my living room.

I took a giant grinder and shaved the plywood down and while it worked it created a mess like you wouldn’t believe lol

Are you familiar with lauan plywood? Flooring installers sometimes use it over subfloor to get a smooth surface. Very thin.

I've used cedar shingles fanned out to often fill dips in floors B4 completing with the self leveling filler.
Worked out quite well.
For minor dips I've also simply used plies of felt paper.

LOL, on a remodeling job I once found piles of old newspapers lying under shag carpeting.
Interesting reading!

Can you jack the floor up?

I have pushed it up some and added piers and I may try to push it up in the lowest spot to minimize the buildup needed.

When we bought our current house there were several low spots. We put a jack under the nearest 2x8 floor joist and turned it up until the floor was level. Then we sistered another 2x8 to the side of the original and screwed it in with many screws. We were then able to take the jack out and the floor stayed level. Repeat as necessary.

Be careful adding any plywood or lauan. Make sure you use adequate construction adhesive to hold it firmly to the sub floor. Nails or screws alone will not be adequate.

Good plan.. Putting a level on your stove and counter tops might prove you right.
