I've yet to smell a diesel that doesn't smell like a diesel.

My '97 F350 psd smelled like propane for a long time - probably because of the catalytic converter.

It's got a fuel leak right now though so it really stinks....

Then you have not been paying attention. Examples are plentiful in suburbia. Any unmodified 2007+ diesel pickup truck exhaust will smell like a large propane heater.

You do not notice because they do not smell like a diesel.
Good point, that could be exactly why i don't notice those. I have notice some vehicle smelling exactly like that, it reminded me of a propane work truck i drove many years ago.

As new technology lowers on site energy generation costs it will disrupt old energy sources.

Son-in-law reported tonight that his drive to work in his Tesla cost him around $0.30 to $0.40 daily. His 2007 Dodge pickup burned three+ gallons on the same trip. Hmmmm, electric looking better for the daily commute. He also has a KY license plate ordered with a picture of a coal mine and "Friends of Coal" across the bottom. That is an official KY state license plate.

Daughter has a Four Runner for gas powered trips.

I'm curious about the math; this implies that on his drive, which sounds like about 36-45 miles (assuming that pickup got 10-15mpg), the Tesla is using about 4kWh.

The Teslas get about 30kWh/100mi according to the epa (+/- depending on the model); at that rate, 4kWh would get you about 13 miles.

So, I'm missing a factor of 3 somewhere.

I don't have a clue. He was looking at an app on his phone which shows his energy usage.

Nothing wrong with coal. In USA coal-fired electricity fuelling a power hungry Tesla Model S has similar emission as a gasoline automobile at 30 MPG. A Tesla Model 3 would be similar to 50 MPG.

My Tesla license plate states, “SILENT”.
