Neighbor had a close one brush hogging

He got too close brush hogging and rolled his tractor into the pond, pinning his foot under the machine with only his mouth above water. He had to dive down three times until he finally worked his foot out of his boot. He's OK and the tractor is being checked.

Glad he is ok, however that job shouldn't be done that way, but rather up and down. Yes, takes more time but you don't risk flip the tractor and getting stuck underwater.

Glad he is OK. Thanks for sharing this. As a new tractor owner, posts like these give me a good reminder to slow down and stay focused on safety.

Did the tractor cut out once it rolled? None of the tractors around here when I was a kid had rops on them. But all the more modern tractors do. Many of them didn’t have fenders either. Maybe they would damage them hauling firewood or something. But most didn’t have fenders. So it would be bad if you rolled over …

Glad he made it out if the pond! I know many operators that plan to "jump clear" of the machine if it tips and flips. My experience with heavy things is that when they go it's so fast you don't have a chance of reacting in time.

I know what it feels like. Had a horse go down and roll in a pond, pinning my leg under her, my nose and mouth were barely above water. seemed like it took a long time for her to decide to get up.

I don't have to worry about rolling the Toolcat, with four wheel steer I can offset the brush hog out over the edge while going forward:

Glad he is ok. Also glad I don't have a pond on river to roll into. Slow is usually safer, but taking a bad angle you can roll going slow or fast. Good advice on going straight rather than around. Pax Domini.

He is just VERY lucky. That's why I have the heavy duty off-set rear blade. Lets the tractor remain on hard, firm ground when blading snow off my driveway. I have a couple areas along the driveway where "over the edge" would mean a twenty foot drop.

This is my small lake. Five acres -80 feet deep. 45 feet deep right where a lava cliffs meet the water. I don't mow anything around the lake and have a 50 foot setback rule for running ANYTHING down the length of the cliffs. The cliffs vary from 25 to 42 feet high.

Anytime you have water and wheels the water
makes the dirt very soft and tires will sink quickly.
Just like mud holes best not to drive threw them!
And the good LORD was looking out for him happy
to hear he's safe! One thing for sure his tractor got
a bath ready or not!

That is a beautiful, ominous-looking lake.
80 feet deep! Wow! Wonder what’s lurking down there?
Was it an old quarry?

We have a couple deep lakes in my area that were mined for Feldspar. Old RR tram tracks approaching the lake where me mined it and used a steam powered elevator to lift the Feldspar up to the waiting ore cars.
Must have been quite a sight.
