Plugged hydraulic intake screen jd5055e

I have a 2014 jd 5055E with 321 hours. I am having a continuous problem with the intake screen plugging up and then starving the pump for oil. This results in jerky loader, power steering and 3 point hitch operation. My dealer said to clean the screen and reinstall the oil. This provides an immediate resolution that lasts for 25-30 hours then it recurs. I have changed the oil and filters as well. The screen seems to be plugged with grey gunk. I’m at wits end as the source of this material. The dealer says that they have never seen it before. I have saved the gunk and will bring it to them to look at but I’m hoping to find out if others have had this issue in case they try to blow smoke up my back side.

When I hear gray gunk my first thought is water contamination.
I'd drain it, dump in some diesel 10-15 gallons, then rock the tractor back and forth to slosh it around drain,
clean all screens replace all filters and if it has it any bottom magnets,refill with cheap hydraulic/transmission fluid,
run for 10-15 minutes just exercising the hydraulics, drain clean screens replace filters, then refill with with quality
fluids and filters.

Could it be from the power reverser clutches?

How is the brakes on your tractor? Looks like they are braking up.

The work fine, although they do groan a little if the tractor has been sitting for a while. Goes away with a little use.

Your brakes must be dry brakes, mine are all wet brakes.

I'd be tempted to send a sample off to a lab for analysis....but don't have any idea what lab or even what kind of lab. Maybe someone here knows.

But it sure looks like something is breaking up. A magnet to start, and then a microscope might tell you something.

Have you got a used power reverser clutch plate that you could look at? And some wet brake plates too if yours has that.

The only attachment I have used is the dealer installed loader. Never been off the machine.

I did replace a shifter boot last winter but there didn’t seem to be a way for dirt to get into the transmission, the linkage seemed pretty tight. The tractor is very clean and stored inside.

That's good. Everything you've said so far seems to point toward some component in the transmission is breaking up and particles being trapped by the filter.

From your picture and description I would suspect either the shifting clutches or the wet brakes - both of which can't help but shed particles when they work, though we don't know how much is normal.

With wet brakes, driving with the parking brake on is said to cause this to happen. I don't know if I've ever seen that, but it does make sense. On our JD a loud alarm goes off if I even start to engage a gear when the parking brake is on. On the Kubota it is perfectly possible to overpower the parking brake and drive away.

If it were mine, I'd want a second opinion from a formal automotive lab in addition to the dealer.

I don't know the details of the controls on the JD5055E, but I'm not sure we are on the same page here.
Are you saying there isn't any alternative way to manually actuate the brakes? Only the brake pedals? What do you do if the primary braking system should fail when you are cruising in road gear? Throw it into Park?

There are only brake pedals, no emergency brake. There is a park position on the transmission. The earlier versions had the same setup.

Update. I took the sample to my Deere dealership and they agree that it looks like either brake of clutch material. They are giving it to a service rep from Deere for analysis. The service manager agrees that it is unusual for this to occur in a machine with only 310 hours. Im hoping that Deere will cover the repair even if the tractor is 7 years old. There is a history of trouble with the hydraulic system going back to the first two years when it was under warrantee. We will see what they say.
