Tractor
John Deere 2305 (2010)
Know this site is mostly about tractors. But looking for any assistance on finding the year and model of a JD gator my son has. The only numbers we could find are on the engine decals. It’s a 2 x4 with dump bed. Thanks to anyone that might know. Pics attached

A picture of the gator would help, I believe the 290 engine was used in the 4x2 gator but would have to do some reading. Deere put a serial number plate on the rear, just to the right of the center post where a hitch could be bolted, it was also stamped on the top of the outside of the frame rail under the passenger seat.

Pic of my 24 yr old 2001 4x2 Gator. It is like the energizer bunny.. just goes and goes and goes. Never a complaint but for the lift linear actuator stripped studs (easy fix).

Attached S/N tag on rear frame.

Attached engine tag as well. Looks to be the same engine FE290D-CS08, but an earlier mfg. number.

They are tough, mine is a 98, other than a belt and a starter a couple Of years ago, it’s never failed me. They’re not fancy or fast, but very dependable!

If the serial Number tag is missing the number is also stamped on the frame. It somewhere from the late 90’s to early 2000’s. I just rebuilt one of these FE290D’s. Very robust engine that includes an oil pump that runs around 50 psi oil pressure. I added a spin on oil filter.

Thanks for all the info posted. Apologies for long delay checking. Been down hard with COVID.
So with the info. Checked under passenger seat. Could see decal that was painted over. Took a razor an scrapped. So does the last number mean it’s a 2014. Or am I way off ? Doesn’t matter the age. Runs great. Just want infor for future part ordering an specs. Again, thanks much.

Beenthere, My sons looks exactly like yours minus the overhead canopy and rear plate decal. Oh, and not as well cared for.
Im just going thru it cleaning it up. Changed oil an filter, rebuilt carb. New sheathing on all wiring. New fuel pump. I put a new spark plug in. The old one gap was set .45. This all started me wondering the year. Looks like it should be set at .30 That’s what I put in a couple weeks ago, but haven’t started it yet. Appreciate your time. On a side note: he has a Kubota tractor same size as my JD2305. Always a competitor on which was best. Now he has a JD Gator

Yep, definitely a 1998. Parts to add a spin on filter are available. Probably not necessary if you keep the oil changed but I added one at overhaul.

Must have been added before he bought it. Already had a spin on oil filter on motor. I didn’t look real close. But thought it was part of the block where it spun on. Just took off. Matched at auto parts store

With the response that you got here, you probably don't need this link. There's some helpful guys there, just seems like there's little "traffic".

From what I can tell most of the 4x2’s did not come with a filter. Maybe it was an option. The filter adapter bolts on in lieu of a plate. If you look close at your pic you can see the hex head of one of the two bolts that attach the adapter. Because these are air cooled engines you will do yourself a favor by blowing every bit of dirt off of your engine, especially around and under the sheet metal baffles.

I have one 4x2 and two 6x4’s. I love these machines.

When he got this machine. I used my 3000psi powerwasher. Could hardly make out an engine. I stuck the wand in every angle. From the top looks great. Yesterday after I attached the pic. Zoomed in an could see all the dirt. Boy this thing is hard to clean. Super info. I had none. So thanks
Bill

On the 4x2 the owner added kit was the only way to add the filter, we fussed at Deere when I was there to make it standard, but their answer was it came without it from Kawasaki, owner can buy and add if they wish. We put a lot of the kits on before they ever left the dealer

Yeah, I’ve told friends for forty years. Changing your oil without changing filter is like taking a shower and putting old underwear back on 🤣. I have changed oil in all my machines like a person that’s OCD. 3000 miles on cars no mater what. My truck with Synthetic says 15000 miles. ( 9 quarts). I don’t care. Know it’s probably a stupid cost on my part. I change it at 4-5000 max. I look at it as a 401k plan. Get out at the end what you put in today.
Back to to the gator: I put a new Hobbs meter on. ( it was broke 452hrs). The dash had one light for parking brake lamp.
Can you tell me what originally Went in the other holes ? Take any info I can get. Google images just doesn’t show much.

The filter is an add-on
Have mine now to "add-on". Did it for someone else, but not yet on mine.. duh!

My five-year old great grand daughter came for a one day visit from TX ... asked "can I drive?". So put her behind the wheel..
