There isn’t a lot where I spray to worry about overspray.

The areas I spray I would either be killing a little bit of lawn or killing weeds near the poison ivy.

I spray generic roundup on all my fence lines. Mix it 2oz per gallon in a 30 gallon sprayer and always have good results. Grass/ weeds begin to yellow in about 3 days.

I use triclopyr 4 (same as remedy) on my pastures for woody plants that come up, such as briars, etc,.

I made up a batch earlier today. Ponytug said 1.7 lbs of ammonia sulfate per gallon. I did quite a bit of research and all I could come up with 17 pounds per 100 gallon, which would equal 0.17 pounds per gallon. The roundup was mixed at 3 ounces per gallon and I dumped a couple tablespoons of a surfactant in also. I’ll find out in a couple of days how it works out.

Oops! I clearly can't do math. Yes, 17lbs/100 gallons is 0.17, not 1.7! My apologies.

All the best,

Peter

I mix mine with about a couple ounces of liquid detergent before I spray. I have always heard that it is best to spray when it is hot and dry and the plants are really thirsty so that they absorb it quickly. This works for me as I sprayed Monday and today, Wednesday, the weeds are turning yellow already.

The surfactant is already in the solution. I use Roundup Max myself. It takes a little time to act unlike 24-D which is almost instant but stinks and you cannot purchase it (depending on where you live) without an applicators license. 24-D is more of a selective herbicide whereas Roundup is not selective, kills everything. I use 24-D on invasive milkweed in non alfalfa fields and 24-D (B) Buteryac on fields with alfalfa.
And a key difference is that roundup is foliage active (must be spayed on green foliage) and it doesn’t go into the soil, so it’s safe to use under trees and other desirable vegetation. It will kill most vegetation, but only if sprayed on green actively growing vegetation. 2-4-D will kill broadleaf plants but not grasses. But it is soil active, so it’s not safe to use in the rooting zones of trees or any non target vegetation.

If you really want to kill those plants fast, use Tordon. But it’s restricted use, so it can only be bought by a licensed applicator.

I use Crossbow on woody plants. The bane of my existence is bindweed, known to urban dwellers as morning glory. Roundup won't kill it. Dicamba won't kill it. 2,4-D won't kill it. Digging it out by hand won't kill it. I have one flower bed I have abandoned and just let the bindweed be a ground cover.
I have killed bindweed with roundup.

I buy Tordon "Ready to Use" in quart squirt bottles, at TSC. I use it for stumps.

Maybe where you live but not here , I can buy it at any number of farm and home stores right off the shelf, I use it on cut stumps just about every weekend.

Tordon RTU can be purchased off the shelf in most locations. The concentrate is licensed applicator only. The stuff is fairly expensive as a concentrate also. The big thing to watch with Tordon is the root translocation. Don't want to use it in places that may have desirable plants, because the stuff can travel through root systems a fair distance.

So a couple of observations. I mixed the ammonia sulfate in buckets of water before I added the roundup, it appeared to dissolve completely, then I added a couple of tablespoons of a surfactant. Then I added the roundup in the 4 gallon backpack sprayer. It’s been about a week and the stuff works but I can’t say it’s a huge improvement. One thing roundup doesn’t work well on is Mares Tail.

For some reason I used some of the ready to spray Roundup in the same area of the gravel driveway and it wiped out the Mares Tail in a few days. The jug is gone but what I read about it is it wasn’t anything special, as in no other weed killer in it except glyphosate. For whatever reason it worked better. It was getting a little thick was why I wanted to use it up, I don’t know if that made it work better.

I keep using the term Roundup because I’m buying the name brand name although in the future I’ll probably start buying generic. I think to get the results I want I’ll have to use something like 2-4-d also.

From what I have read, there are occasional issues with generics not being full strength, but I don't know how much of that is fear mongering to induce us to buy the branded version.

IIRC: mares tail / scouring rush /equisetum is an ancient plant that doesn't respond to most herbicides. You might try a French drain or swale to dry the area out. I have never tried it, but Chlorsuluron is a recommended herbicide for it.

All the best,

Peter

I have used roundup every since it has been out. You mix it according to what you want to kill. I have gone up to a 1 gallon roundup max to 10 gallons of water and it will kill anything!

I mix 6 oz. glyphosate and 3 oz. 2-4D in a 2 gallon sprayer.

It has killed all mares tail I have ever sprayed.

Glyphosate at that rate, by its self, will just stunt it.

Local Ag chemical supplier suggested 3 oz each of 41% glyphosate and triclopyr (Remedy) per gallon of water for a near total kill of all grass and brush. His large farmer brother recommended the same mix. Works very well for me. I have to be very careful around the cotton fields as triclopyr is deadly to cotton.

My experience with hard water and surfactant isn’t good. It immediately develops a milky scum on my 25 gal. tank strainer screen and clogs it. Southern Ag brand off Amazon.
