So i find myself in need of a grapple when i clear brush. I probably doesn’t need to curl the bucket and grab at the same time. Is the diverter valve kit and the grapple all i need? What is the benefits vs a 3rd function kit? The price doesnt seem to be too much more. In shopping a grapple, is there any difference in either compatibility with either 3rd or diverter valve kit? Thanks.

Diverters are generally easier to install on most machines since it stays on the loader and only an electrical connection goes between the loader and tractor. Both diverters and a true 3rd function will work great for grapple use.

I believe there is a OEM 3rd function option for your L2501, if that's available that would probably be your best choice.

As kennyd said, either will work but the 3rd function allows you to feather the speed of the cylinders while a diverter valve is either on or off.

"diverter valve is either on or off"

Not necessarily - a 12 volt diverter can "divert" the output of the bucket CURL circuit, which comes from the FEATHERABLE loader control... Steve

I thought it was the opposite. A diverted allows you to feather the loader control. 3rd function like a rear remote is on or off and can only be feathered by quick cycle of the control. I have a diverter and I can feather it with the joystick of my loader.

It seems i don’t even find a diverter valve kit on my tractor. Are they universal?

Regarding the grapple, what is the cheap way to go? I’ve seen the add on for the existing bucket. Soes that work ok?

The cheap way to go is a pair of clamp on forks for your bucket and a rope. I slide the forks in to or under my brush pile then wrap the rope over. Sometimes I've used chain. Cost me about $120 10 years ago.
You need to decide how much you want to spend.

Does it need 3rd function valve or just diverter valve?

Does it need 3rd function valve or diverter is sufficient?
