In ancient times, garlic was known as moly, the Herb of Hermes, sacred to travelers.

We consume garlic (among other things here) but no point in growing it as we can get all we need (like cabbage) for nothing but a trip down the road to Randy Dusseau's farm. Couple canning jars of pickled beets gains me access to his huge walk in cooler where I can get cabbage and garlic and other things like green peppers for the taking. Only thing we grow any more is taters and Ambrosia SE corn and once in a while melons.

Nice living in a truck farming area where vegetables are available for basically no cost.

Girls like garlic too. On one of our first dates, my wife and I made spaghetti sauce. We decided there wasn't enough garlic, and made a run to the store for more. The warm French bread was also loaded with garlic and butter. Years later, a third of our tomato sauce was canned with fresh hot garlic right out of the ground, washed, chopped, mashed with the whole plant, tops and all. It was the wife's idea. I cheered her on.

One of the advantages of living in rural 'fly over' America. My free corn is actually something that the seed farm down the road would have to pay a disposal fee to get rid of so I do them a favor (and save them money) to use it. Far as produce goes, what little I get is chump change compared to what they sell commercially. 20 heads of cabbage or a couple dozen peppers is nothing to them. They deal with semi loads all the time. I almost got no cost sweet corn this year from them. They grew a couple acres and asked me if I wanted any and I declined. How it works out here in rural America. Everyone watches out for everyone else and I'm all good with it.

At 73, I'm still interested, just not as much however. My wife says I'm a dirty old man... I am, I admit it.

Yeah, I'm just jirking your chain a bit. I live in rural America too and we do watch each others backs. Its what I love about it. Give and take all year around. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Small world, I wasn't aware that John's arm was crushed. I've purchased his Maine Number 1 seed potatoes in the past. Good guy. Have a lot of personal ties in Maine, especially in Aroostook County.
