that does the trick! nice work.Made my own all-around the yard dump trailer in the early 90's and used a salvage yard rear axle from a tiny Honda car.

A major shortcoming of the DR VersaTrailer (in addition to the limited 35˚ dump angle) is that while it can carry up to 2000#, it can only dump 600#. I considered getting one years ago, but that dump limitation was something I just could not live with.View attachment 791319![]()

comparing these two, apparently the WM unit has heavier metal (16ga vs the DR's 20ga), and the WM has a 50° dump angle vs the DR 35°, so stuff should actually fall out of it better.
I'm intrigued, particularly if one could reasonably attach height extenders to fit a bit more chips.
Wouldn't want to go too high though, may roll the whole unit...
Not to defend the DR but I wonder if the dump limitation is a weakness of the winch or can the frame not take the changed geometry's stresses? If the latter, that's definitely a bad thing and says a lot about the rest of the trailer!A major shortcoming of the DR VersaTrailer (in addition to the limited 35˚ dump angle) is that while it can carry up to 2000#, it can only dump 600#. I checked with Woodland Mills. Their Multilander trailer can dump its full 2000# cargo rating.
It's a design limitation (probably of the boom). One of their options is a 1500# rated hoist to replace the hand crank winch. Even with that electric hoist, the 600# dump limitation remains. Not to defend the DR but I wonder if the dump limitation is a weakness of the winch or can the frame not take the changed geometry's stresses? Do you have the Woodland Mills T-Rex trailer? My older Woodland Mills trailer is similar in appearance to the DR but differs in details. It can dump a bed full of chips without much problem. I have the winch in the high speed position and I'm built more like a marathon runner than a linebacker.
Yes.Do you have the Woodland Mills T-Rex trailer?
I looked into this exact idea. I need to learn to weld, it holds back a lot of good ideas I have. Got a neighbor who is half way decent and I think would teach me, got to get on him this summer about it.I built one and had fun doing it. I started with the smallest Harbor Freight trailer in a box. In order to use wheels with the offset and width for real off road tires I ended up using 2" wheel spacers. I miscalculated as 1" would have worked fine. The side rails were some scrap that I had laying around. This trailer has been pulled in excess of thirty mph offroad. It has real wheel bearings vs the tiny little wheelbarrow bearings used in many of the commercial produced trailers. I have around $600 invested in it.
that tandem video is worth watching if anyone is on the fence! Wow.These are two of the three trailer I use on my property... I would need to change the tires on the double axel quad trailer they don't have enough flotation in the mud but the tandem oscillating axel dose wonder, you can go across a ditch and the trailer bed pretty much stay level. (see video below for demonstration)
The second one is a very solid trailer but too heavy for off roading behind my quad but I use it a lot in the field and on solid ground... a very good trailer to pull behind the tractor tho...

It really isn't a big deal. Plenty of two tracks and open fields on my place. About the only time that this rig has to get out into the brush is when I retrieve a downed deer. I can pick my way through most of it or just drag the deer out to an access point if needed. That wide stance makes a super stable trailer.View attachment 793074
It looks very good, however wheels sticking out like that would be a big problem in my case due to many trees on the property.
I needed trailer not any wider than ATV or whatever is pulling it behind.
Your mileage may differ - perhaps your property is more open or trees further apart and it's not a big deal?
