pt1430 wont go forward or backward basically stuck in front yard

/ pt1430 wont go forward or backward basically stuck in front yard #21
Here is instructions from my 1430 manual on the tow procedure. I wish they would proof read their manual, or is it me? (or the "if equipped" disclaimer"). It says to loosen the fitting 2 turns, but then it describes installing a supplied hose. My machines never came with a hose. And other hydo drive machines I have just turn that valve to free wheel.

Anyway the point I tried to make a few post back, was to make sure that "tow valve" didn't back off the 2-turns and now disable your drive.

i called terry back and i described the tram motor and he said since i my tredle is hydraulic i didnt need a jumper hose. he said turn the bolt head (barely seen above and to the right of the 3/16 lettering on hose) anywhere from 1/2 to 2 turns and he said that should free up the wheels so i can get it towed back up to the garage so i can get it out of the front yard and start working on getting the tram motor out. he said when i get it in the garage, i should either remove the gas tank or swing it out of the way, disconnect the pto/steering pump from the tram pump, label all the hoses and then disconnect the hoses then disconnect the tram pump from the engine. so more to come when i do get it back in the garage.

X2 on the "label the hoses" advice! Preferably labeled in more than one place with materials that are oil resistant. (BTDT...) I have found that taking lots of photos as I work my way along to be really helpful in the reassembly process.

Congratulations, it seems like you are making progress.

All the best,

Peter

Good. I wish mine had a tow port.

As mentioned, labels and pictures, pictures and labels. Oily hoses tend to shed taped labels.

I'd give everything a really good degreasing and bath before attempting any disassembly. Dirt is the enemy of hydraulics.

Good luck and thanks for the update. (y)

My tractor is probably dirtier than yours (drought, dust, and hard water here), but I wash everything first in Dawn and water, the compressed air, then brake cleaner, and I scrub the fittings with a toothbrush and brake cleaner one last time to get the dirt out of the threads. I have learned the hard way to wash a bigger area than I need to just to not fingerprint dirt in from some nearby area of the tractor.

When I asked how clean does it need to be to open a motor hose, Terry's advice to me was along the lines of "clean enough for open heart surgery...":)

All the best,

Peter

X4 with wash the area as best you can, label, picture, draw and document where hoses connect.

It may look clean now, but after a month of waiting for the part to come back, it will look like a tangled mess of old Christmas lights.

I used zip ties of various colors on the hydraulic lines then sketched the ports with the corresponding colors to when I swapped my pump.

thanks everyone, i had a local farmer get the pt towed up to the garage today. i got the hoses ziptied with different colored and sized zipties so far. stiil have to unscrew the big hydraulic filter housing from the gas tank and also have to remove the battery so i can get the gas tank moved so i can get to the tram pump. ill give everything a good cleaning once thats done then take more pics for documentation before taking off the pto/sterring pump to get to the tram pump. after 16 years of owning this 1430 finally a major problem to really take a lot of time to get it fixed. also someone asked how many hours i have on it and i have a little bit above 900 hours. thanks

You might want to try not taking the hoses off the PTO pump, if it can just be moved out of the way enough to get the tram out.
The worse part of this job is the oily mess.

Be careful on how much it weighs, might be close to 50 lbs or ?

You know, that color coded zip tie deal is pretty slick! (y)

Yeah, while 50# might not seem like much, if you're bent over or even at just slightly an off angle, it doesn't take much to torque your back.

Good advice.

⬆️ What he said! I find myself on my knees servicing the hoses a lot just to save my back. It has also made me a wrench hoarder; trying to find the right length and the angles to be able to access certain hoses, but with the right wrench it is so much faster.

"A poor worker blames his tools"; I know that I don't know enough to do things the "smart" way.

I love @scotts562 tip for using the colored zip ties. It is way better than what I have done in the past, thanks!

All the best,

Peter

A set of purpose made hydraulic wrenches is a worthwhile investment.

well i got the gas tank drained since it was just about full when it crapped out. had to undo the screws that held the hydraulic filter to it and tied it up to the cover so i could swing the gas tank out of theway. i was able to remove and cap the easy hoses. iit looks like i have to remove the pto hoses and pto pump because i cant get the other back and underneath hoses off the tram. i'm going to have the farmer come over during the week because i dont have a wrench big enough to take off the 1" hydraulic hose on the pto pump and have him help me access and take off the tram pump and other hoses. while i was draining the gas tank i was thinking before i have to put it back i might as well put in a inline fuel shut off switch and then replace the inline fuel filter as well. to be continued during the week...

Yep. Might as well do some maintenance/customizations while you have the easier access. (y)

I've been tempted to put in a fuel valve like was on my motorcycle, that had a reserve function. That way, if I don't pay attention, and run out of fuel in the back 40, I could turn to the reserve setting, and get back to the barn.

Nice to see the progress!

+1 on the inline filter. Mine has a see through case, so you can see if there is debris on the filter.

Do you need more space? Did Terry suggest unbolting the engine mounts and sliding the engine back? (Never done it myself.)

I keep looking for jumbo openend wrenches at garage sales...

All the best,

Peter

well with the help of the farmer i got the tram motor and pto motor out. we had to take off the front cap(finger pointing to) that allowed us to get the pto motor out. then we were able to get to the hoses that were on the right side of the tram pump( if looking from right side of tractor) than undid the bolts to pull the tram motor out. we put the pto pump and front cap back on and i'm going to get a big enough box and send the entire unit down to terry to rebuild and check out. will have to clean out the bay because of all the oil that had spilled even though we tried to minimize the leakage. more to follow ...
