What Do You Do For Exercise?

When I was working construction I noticed that now and then a strong looking fella would show up wanting to work on our crew and, as we would work through the day he would usually run out of gas well before the day was out. Most of us were of average build but hardened up to work. That has to mean something
Yup, gym muscles ain't the same thing as work muscles, especially all-day work muscles.

I think when I’m walking my IPhone is pretty accurate for steps and distance. Sometimes I think it’s counting steps when it shouldn’t be though, like moving around in a chair, driving my tractor etc.

Yes, the Fitbit can count moving around in a chair or driving, but those will be minimal "steps" if one is trying to do 5,000 or more steps a day.

I asked the dearest who wears a GPS gadget watch that counts steps and mileage which allows her a discounts on insurance. She says we always go over 15,000 when we are doing trail work.

My fit bit does count the occasional bounce when I'm driving my work truck. I'll feel it vibrate to remind me to get off my butt, then a little while later it will vibrate and say I completed my 250 steps for that hour

I average 18,000 steps a day during the week. I'm a mechanic, so I'm always on the move. I also walk between 2 and 3 miles a day with the pooch.

Weekends if it's rainy, I'll still have over 10,000 steps. If I'm out on the property clearing the build site and cutting trees....... I'm somewhere between 22,000 and 25,000. That includes the 2 to 3 miles I walk the pooch.

I’m still riding a bike for most of my serious exercise. I’ve owned it about 1 1/2 years and have 3300 miles on it. My rides are between 10 and 40 miles.

Glad to see some people know they need to get there heart up a bit and for a while. You'll live longer or at least better. Feeling tired is not what does it.

Yep. My wife gets about 1200 steps on her fitbit while sitting in the car on our 13 hour drives to Oklahoma.

Wife and I always try to walk at a pace where we're breathing hard enough that it's difficult to hold a conversation. Unless, of course, we want to talk, then we slow down. :ROFLMAO:

I'd guess you get even more "steps" mowing the lawn on your tractor per hour, than riding in a car.
I'd imagine so if I used a fitbit, but I don't use a fitbit. I use an iPhone in my pocket. It doesn't get bounced around as much as a fitbit on one's wrist.

Kinda funny that wife and I will go on a walk, and she'll get significantly more steps than me. Now I do have a longer stride, so I'd expect to get less steps than her. However, we walk together, and it tell us she walked farther than I did. No way. We were side-by-side.

I believe my iPhone uses GPS only to figure distances and then divides that by the number of steps to get my stride length and updates itself fairly often. However, it's a common concern that iPhone UNDERESTIMATES the number of steps. So that can be another factor why her step count it much higher than mine, besides my longer stride length. (although underestimating is better for you, so I'm not concerned).

However, I think the fitbit needs to be calibrated to stride length manually once in a while. Where you measure off a distance, count the number of steps, and divide steps per distance to get stride length. Then you have to enter that in your fitbit program. If you don't do that, it will estimate you stride length based on age and height, as I recall.

Anyhow, wife is much 'fitter' than I am. She rides an elliptical trainer twice a day for half an hour each time at its highest setting. I can do about 5 minutes before I want to barf!

I figured it was counting arm movements since it's on your wrist.

I verified that was actually the case while sitting at a stop light

and just what arm movements were you performing while sitting at the stop light

I think I have figured out my phone counts steps when I’m mowing my yard on the tractor but not many in the car or when riding my bike.

I generally walk for an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays and ride my Ebike on Wednesdays and Sundays. Don't know how many steps or distance on the walking but the bike has over 11000Ks on it. (bought new, no throttle) I think that's enough for an 85 year old.
