Thoughts on Chevy Colorado or Ford Ranger

Other than my Focus RS with it's turbo charged 320 horse engine (built in Germany), everything I own and my wife own's is a V8. No replacement for displacement in my book.

Why trailer brakes for 3,000lbs?
That sized truck is supposed to have them. in the link above about the bent frame, one reason the warranty claim was denied was because the trailer was 2100 lbs.

I don't worry about it, but had just read that link which is why I mentioned it.

My next GN, if I ever buy one will have disc brakes, not drums. Disc brakes stop better, fade less and pad changes are a snap as well. Why 95% of big trucks sold today have disc brakes.

I didn’t know single axle 3,000lb trailers had brakes.
Mine doesn’t

You can put brakes on most trailer axles, including 2,000 lb boat trailers.

Does Toyota or Dodge - or anyone else - make a truck in the same category as the Ranger? Our extended family was solidly Ford for generations until we started buying Toyotas.
Not really. I suppose you could count the tacoma, but to me it's kind of a wimpy truck and you couldn't give me a toyota anyway.
Only less than full-size truck Stellantis sells in the U.S. is the Jeep truck, which doesn't do much for me.
That’s how I found Ram and so happy I did.
Unfortunately, despite persistent rumors of a Ram Dakota it doesn't appear that Stellantis is planning on having an entry in the mid-size truck category. A shame, I really liked the 2 Dakotas I've had.

I'll probably be in the market for a replacement truck in the next few years...much as I like my Dakota, it's 23 years old and isn't going to last forever. Don't want/need a full size truck, and always buy used. Not many Colorados or Rangers on the used car lots. Like the OP, I'm split between the 2...guess it'll come down to which one I can find a good deal on when the time comes.

There is a Jeep Gladiator in the video as well that the frame is bent on. My thoughts are.. Buy a weinie truck, don't expect it to emulate a large one with a real frame. It could be straightened but would entail some serious jack.
Not sure I'd call any of the modern small trucks "weenie" trucks. Most 80s/90s small trucks (foreign or domestic), yeah but as others have noted today's "small" trucks are almost as big/capable as full size ones were 30 years ago.
That having been said, if you've got a serious load to pull, get a truck that can handle it.

The worst part of the Tacoma is it's lack of interior volume, especially when compared with all these new mid-size offerings. I've always liked the Tacoma, but as a giant with two children, it was never an option. What really blows me away is just how little rear leg room the crew-cab has!

I'd love to see a new Dakota, but I am under the impression that Stellantis doesn't want to take sales away from the Gladiator just yet. I'd guess when the Gladiator production line is paid off we might then see a Dakota, but who knows.

The automobile market looks like it's got an odd future ahead.

That really is odd. My Tundra double cab (smaller than crew) has lots of space in back seat (I'm 6'1 250). I've ridden in the back of a co-workers Tacoma crew, but it was just to lunch. A heck of a lot more room than our Ranger extended cab (jump seats, lol). I wouldn't buy anyone's crew cab because the point of a pickup, to me, is the bed. Anything less than 6.5' is not worth it. Also don't want a truck any longer than about 19'. Gets to be hard to fit in a garage or a parking space. Mines only about 228 inches and can barely fit in the garage.

Getting hard to find a non-crew cab pickup anymore. I agree, the 3-4' beds you see these days are all but useless.
