The best way to jump charge a battery is to take it apart, and test and boost the individual cells.

Barring that, jumping voltage across the entire pack will also charge the cell(s) that are lower than the rest, hopefully getting them close enough that the charger can balance them.

If the cells have been too low for too long, they'll be damaged, and may not take or hold a charge again, or just have lower capacity.

I’m hoping deciding on Stihl battery platform proves wise in the long run in that the platform remains and continues to be refined.

That said the Stihl line definitely isn’t in the voltage race which is fine by me as long as it is reliable and does not become obselete.

DeWalt and Milwaukee have tremendous variety in their battery tool lines…

With 3 Stihl batteries at the ready I would be interested in more offerings outside traditional forestry and landscape…

I imagine a Stihl AP battery to make a great portable cell or laptop charging source…

Dolmar already went this way and stopped making gas ope. Husky closing another plant in US that didnt do saws and said it was moving it overseas to battery stuff. They are all gearing for it.

Did you notice your electric bills lately? Dec 2022 was paying 5.5 cents kw, June 2023 7.5 cents a kw. July 2023 12.6 cents a kw. ;) Seems they are planning on making a buck off us doubling for all this charging stuff. 🤯:ROFLMAO:

Devil in the details as batteries requiring charging...

This month I'm at 33 cents kW on a $30,000 commercial bill...

Residential rates much higher especially the 4pm to 9pm.

I recharge my battery tools outside peak use rates.

Exactly what we do now, not only battery tools but everything that consumes the ever increasing cost of provided electricity. My wife only does the laundry and dries the clothes (electric dryer) during off peak hours which in our case is between 7PM and 3AM. Same with the ac. On a set back t'stat. Dinner (electric induction stove) is now later as well.

We have handily managed to hold our utility bill pretty constant doing that.

The natural gas component keeps increasing... $90 last month... home use electric I keep in check...

Wow 33¢/kWH! where is that? I thought we were high here in VT.

No NG here, never has been because it's not financially practical for any utility to run a pipeline because the density of users is very sparse. Only 3 houses on this entire road and I own 2.

It's actually considered cheap here...

PGE in California.

High cost utility continues to drive solar installs... always seeing a new one going up in the neighborhood.

Home Battery packs becoming popular with incentives if in conjunction with solar install.

I believe it would be a great breakthrough when your EV batteries can supplement home power simply by the flip of a switch.

Wonder how many chainsaw batteries it would take for home power?

Some EVs can already do that. We own a Chevy Bolt, which is not able to do that. Even if it was, I don't think I would do it. The batteries are only good for so many cycles, and it's a major process in the Bolt to swap them for a new one. (If I recall correctly, there was more than 8 hours of labor involved just to make the physical swap when we were subject to a battery recall.) If it were able, I might use it in a real emergency, but I would not connect for every day peak-shaving use by the utility.

Eventually, we'll buy a Powerwall or something similar to supplement our solar PV system, and we'll probably allow that to be cycled by the utility, especially if they give us a half-decent deal on it.

If our next EV has a simpler-to-change battery system, and if the batteries (and battery swap cost) aren't significantly more expensive than a home-mounted battery, I'd consider allowing the utility to draw from that for peak-shaving.

Always good to have a plan B and C etc.

When we had the extended power shutoffs some of my coworkers were at their wits end as cell and laptop batteries died.

I asked if they had tried charging from their cars and it did not occur to them

On a side note during these extended shutoffs my old rotary dial plain old telephone never went down while everyone's VOIP and cell and cordless did... the old DSL kept working too.

Sadly last year the DSL is no more... I was the first in the neighborhood and also the last...

I guess I can drag my generator to the woods, and plug in my charger and charge batteries as I cut.

I charge my cordless drills from my truck with a plug in 12volt charger...

Maybe same is available for Milwaukee and DeWalt?

Dang my last power bill came out to 19.155 cents per kwh. Residential here does not have time or peak billing it's just a flat rate. Businesses and farms can opt in for time metered power but many don't as if a dairy it's not practical to try and avoid peak power rates. Milk coolers and compressor and vacuum pumps have to run.

Whoa baby!!

I got pretty irritated when ours crested 10c, now in the 14-18 range. Looking seriously at more solar to augment my 15kw system.

33c is crazy talk…

Decently large commercial project I’m on now pays 4-5c… but they accept 138kv from the utility. Step it down to 12.5kv for distribution on the campus.

It is only going to get worse. The 2020 California Solar Mandate went into effect on January 1, 2020. The mandate requires that all new residential construction projects have solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed. This includes single-family homes, condominiums and apartment buildings less than three stories high. The system must be sized to provide for the annual electric usage. The 2022 amendments added mandatory battery requirements for some businesses, with new residential construction having to be battery ready. You can see where that is going. Less residential users paying for electricity means commercial users will be paying more to keep the grid running or forced to install solar panels.
