The last few posts remind me of something we used to say when I was working for a company based in Germany:

"In America, 200 years is a long time. In Europe, 200 miles is a long distance."

One time I was stuck in former East Germany over a weekend, and a buddy of mine from their Stolberg office said, "hey, let's go to Czechoslovakia this weekend." I'm preparing for an all-day trip, before I find out it's a drive of less than 40 minutes. :D

Meanwhile, they get a kick out of us referring to any building built after the 17th century as "old".

We used to make that run to see my folks from outside Milw to SF. Almost exactly 500 miles. We'd often stop at "Amish Ovens" it was about half way. Just a bit south of Rochester. Did it for Christmas one time overnight as my wife got off at midnight. It was so cold the exhaust froze to the side of the minivan. Roads weren't busy...but usually aren't bad.

Before they rescinded the 55mph debacle, it was truly painful just to go from SF to the Black Hills.
Rochester (Oronoco) to Custer. Have done it a number of times over the last 20+ years. I90 can be really nasty in winter. Frequently closed just for visibility.

When it hits 6 bucks a gallon you might change your mind... and it will.
And the trade-off is to spend 2 days on the road with a $125 hotel bill in between?

Edit: $6 may make a difference on whether the trip is made at all, but not in how it is made.

Got to spend a night in Murdo once because of the weather. Another one in St. James, MN. Have cousins in Sturgis area, so have gone all across that stretch of 90. Much better in June. :)

Can we include the guys who put low-profile tires on 22" rims, and mount them so they stick entirely out past the body of the truck? :D
I work at a mine and it is a 70 KM trip into it on gravel bush road.

A bunch of miners got their big new diesel pickups and put those rubber band wheels on them that stick out past the body of the truck.

Only took a couple weeks before they showed up with giant mudflaps wrapped all the way around the wheel wells mounted on them. Wow, that looks cool now! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Both of my diesel trucks run stock size Falken Wildpeak A/t great tires for the Arkansas mud, if you don't have Tennessee stud.
