2014 Mahindra 6110 Gear Cab
New member, but I can see how a forum like this can be super helpful to everyone! So here is my question:

My Mahindra 6110 cab tractor has an electric fuel pump just a short distance from the fuel tank that pushes fuel up to the higher filter assembly. I just had to replace it and when I turn the ignition to the on position, I hear it hum to life. However, it doesn’t shutoff when system pressurizes…just keeps humming like it is running all the time…is this normal? I don’t recall the sound with the old pump but can’t say for certain. I imagine other diesel tractors are all pretty similar, so is this pump supposed to kick off when pressurized or does it run the whole time the key is turned on?

Most electric pumps run continuously to some degree. They may not all be the same as far as the sound they produce, but will only build to their predetermined pressure and then bypass. I doubt your new pump has a problem.

Thank you for your response! Great I was hoping it wasn’t going to burn up the pump but it runs like a top with the new electric pump. I have had reduced power for a couple years now and I changed fuel filters and added cleaners to the fuel tank but couldn’t figure it out but I think that electric pump has been out for a while now. It will run without it because I unplugged the new one once the system was primed and it will run but has a noticeable bogging down like it isn’t getting enough fuel. With electric pump plugged back in it has full power again that it hasn’t had in years.

Many tractor manufacturers go the "cheap route" and let the injection pump pull fuel from the tank through the filter(s) without supplying an actual lift pump. Yes, it does work, but sooner or later problems can/will develop because of it. For one thing, it's hard to keep air out of the system when it's constantly under vacuum. Putting an electric pump at the tank supply and pushing fuel through the filters always seemed like a better idea to me.

Thanks Harry for the response. I guess I missed it originally and just saw it now but yes it does work letting the injector pump pull the fuel but when the engine loads up it can’t keep up or it is pulling air from somewhere because it would cutout and pull down and die on me. It’s been running fine with the new lifter pump, I just don’t remember the constant noise of the pump running.
