How much do you care about pre emissions

Could the old tractor just have a poor exhaust? Headache is a sign of CO poisoning and 30 minutes is about right.
Also, I'm not sure what type of a respirator is going to filter CO from the air. Something else is happening here, I suspect.

I've owned a half dozen or more pre-emissions tractors, and one with DPF. Neither ever gave me headaches from the exhaust, but I will admit the DPF is much more pleasant to be around, particularly when connecting implements to a running tractor in a shed or other confined space.

On the flip side, the DPF makes the machine a hot ride in summer, but pleasantly warm in winter. Thankfully, I do most of my "tractoring" in cooler weather.

Emissions is not an important enough factor to have any sway over my tractor purchase decision, there are honestly several dozen other factors that matter way more to me. Even if I had the choice, all else being equal, I'm not sure which way I'd go. I really question the decision making skills of anyone who puts this one point high on their list of important factors when choosing a tractor, it really just isn't that big a deal, unless you're that rare bird running an un-cabbed machine in 100F weather on a frequent basis.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is more of a gasoline engine concern. The concentration is about 10 times higher from a gasoline engine ( without a catalytic converter) than a diesel engine.
Diesel’s though, have NOx and other particulate nasties to watch out for that gasoline engines don’t.

As far DEF and DPF's I don't want them and will avoid them as much as possible. None of my tractors have them and my diesel pickup is gone. I miss the mileage and the torque of that engine but, that exhaust the worst I've ever been around. Back into a shed to load something and the exhaust was terrible, the only vehicle I've ever had to shut off to load something or hookup to something.

My Massey 1540 is pre-ridiculous-diesel mandates. Love it.
The factory had the exhaust exit up to the front and low. Fine design for the tractor, if it wasn’t equipped with a loader. The exhaust would reflect off the loader and come back at me. Undesirable situation, no matter what tier engine. I cut off the forward running pipe and installed a $10 elbow with a clamp so it runs rearward under the platform. Works great.

I used to get splitting sinus headaches when I operated my old pre-emissions tractor for more than 30 minutes. Now I can operate my tier 4 tractor all day and no headache. I would never own another pre-emissions tractor again.
^^same here. I use to work near a rail yard and the smoke the old engines gave off was bad if the wind was a certain way. Then they switched to new clean engines and you could not even see any exhaust....amazing. Most of the issues with emission equipment is that it isn't run hard enough to operate efficiently. If a person just putts around the property (like my neighbor does), they will have issues at some point. My excavator friend (and his workers) NEVER run the equipment slow and easy and they don't have problems except a sensor in the rare occasion.

Bought a new L3200 in 2012 to get a tractor before final Tier 4. Bought current (used) L4240 to avoid DPF when we went a bit larger in 2019. I heard too much negative early on to be interested in the newer emission standards. Many report trouble-free operation now, but I'm still not sold on it. No sense burning extra fuel to "clean" the DPF.
Burning extra fuel for 15 minutes every 60+ hours.

I think it was particulates. It was like that from the day I bought it new in 2000.

Yep, and it you read that entire discussion, he figured out the situation and it was the operator’s misunderstanding.
