Lubrication additives for Diesel Fuel in older tractor

I use it religiously in all my diesels. It ain't cheap but it works and it don't take much either. Keep in mind that the PS biocide will kill the algae but it won't remove the exoskeletons that are left behind so you must clean the fuel system anyway.

What I don't see in the article, is the size wear scar one would obtain with the fuel we had prior to the demand for lower sulfur.

Personally I use Stanadyne products in my Cummins pickup, New Holland tractor, and my Homelite generator with a Lombardini engine. Stanadyne is a long time manufacturer of diesel engine injection equipment, so I assume they know what the equipment needs.

I don't understand what you are getting at

I've heard of folks that tip a bit of engine drain oil into the fuel tank while it's full.

Maybe a pint to ten gallons or so.

Not that I have ever done THAT...

From a diesel fuel lubricity study, Marvel Mystery oil was about the worst additive tested. It actually reduced the lubricity of diesel fuel by quite a bit.

Marvel Mystery Oil
Gas, Oil and Diesel fuel additive (NOT ULSD compliant, may damage 2007 and newer systems)
HFRR 678, 42 microns worse than baseline fuel.
320:1 ratio
Yeah Marvel isn't too bad for freeing up a stored engine that the rings have rusted lightly to the cylinder walls.

Probably cheaper to mix ATF with acetone though.

I do add two stroke oil when I add diesel to the two old tractors and was using some Howes as well

It does seem to make them run just a bit quieter and smoother. Not sure I need the Howes for the older tractors. 2 stroke oil seems to be effective all by itself. In the winter I add some of the 'white' bottle

I've used Howes on my diesels for years . I always added what was recommended at every fill up since I didn't have bulk storage. It helps the old engines, by boosting the cetane as well as cutting down on carbon deposits, as well as the newer ones . A bottle of Howes goes a long way when you only need to mix a few ounces to a tank full of fuel.

agreed. go to a large volume truck stop & you'll see Howes on the shelves. this is what many truckers use. helps remove moisture, adds lubricity & prevents gelling. does not however contain algaecide.

Yes I think Howes is good stuff, my Cummins in the truck developed a slight intermittent miss Interestingly after filling up at a station I don't generally use. That is why I bought the Howes in the first place since it is a common rail.
Dumped in a bit more than the recommended amount and after a trip back to town and home the engine ran normally, I have to assume that it cleaned out or freed up the mis firing injector, That was enough for me to add it to the newer diesel. The mis has never come back and that was at least a year ago.

Ok you have convinced me the bottle is about empty, so will buy some more and keep adding it to all my diesels, just no 2 stroke oil for the common rail.
