Chryslers grandson wants to save the brand

Couldn't see myself wanting a retro "mailman Jeep" that had the ride, handling and fuel economy of a tractor.
Don't knock it 'til you try it.

After converting a DJ-5 to 4WD, adding lockers and such, it's quite a capable little vehicle. Used to use it for about 10 miles per week, in Low range and mostly in 2WD, for many years until getting a Can Am, which can do some things quicker.

But yes, it got around 1 mpg until I replaced the non-adjustable carburetor and doubled the mileage. Other than pulling trailers, harrows, and such around, it's also a handy rescue vehicle, here seen airing up a backhoe after getting a flat.

That backhoe is unlike the ones I have seen and operated.

Around here, Suzuki Jimny or Samurai are quite popular. They are featherlight so they get anywhere, have a way higher quality than a Landrover, and are much more affordable than a Nissan Patrol or let alone, a Toyota Landcruiser or a G wagon.

These guys test a G wagon (G63 AMG most expensive 4x4 there is, i suppose) a Jeep (serious offroader) versus Suzuki Jimny (the lightest, most inexpensive offroader available in Europe)

So i think that niche is already filled 🙂

It's a Unimog. I also have the forklift/crane version and the very rare dozer/trencher.

They're fun. I've learned a lot tinkering with them.
Two of my (parents) neighbours have them. They both started with a 1970s 85hp naturally aspirated truck diesel. (I assume yours is the lighter version with the OM615 four cylinder, or OM617 five cylinder from the passenger cars ? ) One still has it because his compact car cant tow much and its hobby only. The other traded up three times, and uses it for his landscape business. He has a 20 something meter Hiab crane on it, used for logging, or with a man basket (with all required safety systems in place) as manlift for tree trimming. His has a 290hp OM906 engine, also found in medium duty Freightliners. I think Detroit Diesel called them the MB906

The Suzuki got a bad rap here after a commercial showing one speeding through mountain turns led a lot of people to "try this at home". Doing some serious roll overs.
Suzuki never really recovered from that here in the states

"try this at home".
Monkey see, monkey do...

What always intrigues me, that though the USA is the land of freedom and personal responsibility, i cannot watch any vehicle commercial that doesnt write a disclaimer "dramatization is applied. Professional driver on a closed court. Do not try at home"
We in Europe, in the eyes of Americans, are supposed to be safeguarded by a maternalising government, dont have those disclaimers in commercials, or it must be really something crazy that the vendor decides to put "do not try this at home" to avoid public outrage if some dumb kids decide to do so...

I mean, Europe and the USA are different when it comes to personal liberty... but the difference isnt as black and white as some make it out to be, sometimes you see remarkable details that contradict the common preconceptions... 😉

USA may be different in litigation outcomes for personal injuries. Not uncommon to see attorney billboard advertising personal injury lawsuits besides the major roads.

Pictures please.
I'll post some later today.

Hmm. I built my Jeep CJ3A as light as possible, but it was still far from able to go anywhere. That Postal Jeep on the other hand was made heavy on purpose, to make it able to do things I needed it to do.

The FLU419s have the OM362 engines. They're 110 hp as I recall, which is enough...until going down the road. Or rather up a road. They may not look like it but weight 16,000 lbs.
