Don't knock it 'til you try it.Couldn't see myself wanting a retro "mailman Jeep" that had the ride, handling and fuel economy of a tractor.
After converting a DJ-5 to 4WD, adding lockers and such, it's quite a capable little vehicle. Used to use it for about 10 miles per week, in Low range and mostly in 2WD, for many years until getting a Can Am, which can do some things quicker.
But yes, it got around 1 mpg until I replaced the non-adjustable carburetor and doubled the mileage. Other than pulling trailers, harrows, and such around, it's also a handy rescue vehicle, here seen airing up a backhoe after getting a flat.
