I ended up removing the other two screws and taking the pump housing off. With the housing removed it was very clear to see what had happened. As someone said earlier, all that pressure has to go somewhere…

With the pump housing removed, this left the cast end piece, stuck, to the mount. I took the two bolts that were used to hold on the pump and screwed them in the near side of the pump end cover. I them took a couple of box end wrenches and slipped over the bolts and placing the box end up near the bolt heads to get a little leverage. With gloves on to protect fingers, I pushed down on the wrenches to get some leverage to hopefully pop the pump end off. It took just a little bit of pressure and the stuck pump cover just popped right off. (Sorry I do not have pictures, but I was concerned at this point and really trying to come up with a fix.).

With the old pump completely removed, I prepped the new pump to be installed. I was now able to remove the flange connector from the bottom of the old pump and install on the new one. Be careful when removing and installing the flange as there is a small O-ring that’s a devil to find if it pops out and falls on the ground – don’t ask me how I know this….

I put a little hydraulic fluid in the cavity of the new pump. I then took pliers and turned the shaft to get the fluid circulated. I then mounted the pump to the bracket. There is a small collar in the mount bracket attached to the drive shaft in which the hydraulic pump shaft has to insert . It took some effort, but once lined up, the pump just slid right on. I put some light-weight oil on the pump cover that joins to the mount to hopefully avoid the stuck cover should I have to remove later. But, I really doubt it did any good.

With the new pump installed I was ready to reconnect the hoses.

I reconnected the supply side first and filled the hydraulic reservoir. I then attached the coupling under the floor board to see if fluid would be gravity fed into the pump. After a few minutes I saw just a tiny bit of fluid coming out of the pressure side of the pump. I ran the hose bolt through the hose connector and tightened onto the pump.

I was unsure of how much to tighten the bolts, so, using the SWAG method, I tightened to what I remembered as being the approximate tightness before I removed the bolts (before removing, I try to tighten just a little to get a feel for the pressure needed to tighten the bolt). The bolts were on really tight, so, I tightened them down with quite a bit of pressure.

With the system having been “opened” I decided this would be a good time to replace the hydraulic filter. This was very straight forward and simple. Just make sure to disconnect the supply couplings before beginning as it’s difficult to remove and install filters with fluid pouring all over the place – once again, do not ask how I know this. I hand tightened the new filter back on and this seemed to be sufficient tightening.

I double checked all the connections and couplings. I then went inside the house to get something to drink and get away from it for a few minutes. I came back outside and once again checked all the couplings and connections. Working my through the hydraulic system from the reservoir back through the return line checking all connections and coupling.

I then got on the tractor and fired her up. Thank the Good Lord above, as of yet there was no hydraulic fluid leaking around the FEL joystick valves as I had seen when this happened. I let her run a few minutes, made sure the tranny and axle were in “neutral”, made sure the parking brake was set and got off the tractor. I wanted to be able to watch the pump and connections as I exercised the system for the first time.

With the FEL still on the stands, I started working the bucket up and down; still no leaks around the valves and the pump, connections and couplings all looked good. At first the bucket was erratic; very slow and jumpy which I expected as the lines were being filled. Feeling a little better, I got on the tractor and fully extended (raised) the FEL. Very slow and jerky going up but smooth on the way back down. I floated when the FEL was on the stands and then raised again. I then lowered and removed the stands. With the stands removed I fully extended and retracted the FEL several times and had very smooth operation. I then started working the 3 PH and all was well. Everything checked out fine.

If someone sees something that I missed or should have added please post. If there are other tips or tricks that would help please share.

I know this was probably very straight forward and easy for some. Looking back I should not have been as nervous as I was. But, for a newbie like me that’s not familiar with working on tractors, especially hydraulic systems, it was a little scary. I want to thank those that offered help and advice in this thread. Want to also say thanks to my dealer, Phillip Gooch at Circle G Tractors, for helping me along as well.

Hopefully, this experience and the sharing from others in this thread might be able to help someone else later down the road – that’s the hope!

Thanks,
Eddie

Very nice informative post. Job well done. I dead headed my pump and split it also when I first added my loader. Two different Hydraulic connections that seemed to lock together wouldn't allow flow.. Live and learn I guess.

Do you happen to have a picture of the hoses? I'm trying to figure out best way to route them. Thanks

I just wanted to reiterate the hose clamps to make the couplings not disconnect. I did that, and it seems quite secure. I didn't read carefully enough to see how you handled the issue, but I will tonight. I just wanted to remind you to make sure that it is handled.
