1986 John Deere 855
Can someone explain the lift mechanism for the belly mower on a John Deere 855? I just traded my problematic classic convertible for (what appears to be) a well maintained but long dormant 855 and see no possible way the mower deck could be raised via the 3 point mechanism in back. There is absolutely nothing connecting that deck to anything in the rear and guessing I am missing some parts. There are 2 short chain linkages that connect the 3 point lifting arms to the frame about 6" away and guessing this is where it would normally connect far forward to the mower deck.

The three-point control lever lifts the belly mower, and the little wheel on the transmission tunnel by your left foot sets the height it will drop to, when the quadrant controlling the three-point is lowered. So if you want the belly mower to stay up when lowering your three-point, first raise the three-point to raise the mower deck, then crank the height adjust wheel to the right until it stops. After that, you can lower the three-point without the belly mower coming back down.

Oh, and if you think you’re missing linkage, first raise the three-point control lever, then crank the height adjust wheel to the left (counterclockwise) until it stops, then lower the three-point lever. I bet your linkage will drop down after you do this.

Thanks. I'll try it but I can see the front arms that should lift the deck (as pictured) and there is nothing going back to the 3-point lift. In the deck1 pic included, the mower deck is attached via the silver strut to the black arm coming down from the frame but there is nothing going back from there so pretty sure I am missing what they call the "top link".

Nope. Top link is the upper link on the 3-point hitch, which is just a passive turnbuckle to keep the implement from flopping over when the lower arms lift it.

The mower deck linkage has no connection to the 3-point hitch, they just operate off the same controls. There should be a pair of arms that lower down from the frame, in front of the rear tires, in the area near the foot boards where your feet rest while driving. Those connect to links on the back of the mower deck, and you may be missing those links.

I don't remember the front of the mower deck, but I don't recall a lifting mechanism in the front. Rather, I think just the rear lifts, but draws rearward, which has the effect of lifting the front as well.

My 855 came with a 72" deck, which I removed and sold almost immediately after buying my tractor, as I already owned a zero turn mower. So, although I was over and under every damn part of that tractor a dozen times, making various repairs and upgrades, I don't remember all of the details of the mower deck.

Well, you can thank AI for giving me that top-link term. After searching for that, I was made aware it wasn't the right term. I do have those arms that come down from the frame and are also connected to the back of the deck. The problem is they just hang there and activating the rockshaft control lever doesn't move them at all. I could swear I saw videos where activating that lever to raise/lower the deck ALSO did the same to the empty 3-point in back - but nothing was mounted back there.

Just for giggles, I hooked a chain to each side where that arm connects to the strut coming from the deck and then ran it back and secured it to a box blade mounted in back. When I raised the box blade, the mower deck also raised up (being pulled towards the rear) so that's why I think I am missing a link in there.

I also have a 54" zero turn but don't want to wear it out mowing 8 acres. The plan is to eventually get a sickle mower for the tractor, along with a rake a small baler but for now, I'd like to use the mower it has. Until I can figure it out, I'll likely just figure out how to manually lift it and lock it UP so it is out of the way and not dragging. It might require just removing the mower but we'll see.

I had a few different 855s in the late 1980s and early 90s and all were equipped with the optional mid-mount mower lift kit. This allowed the mid mount mower to be raised and lowered with the dual selective hydraulic control lever. There was an additional hydraulic cylinder that was attached to a lift mechanism that raised and lowered the mower. As I recall, if you had the front loader attached this cylinder continued to be activated when operating the loader but the mower could remain in the raised position with the mower adjusting wheel in the transport position. I can't remember if there was a way to lockout the mid-mount cylinder when using the loader.

I think this option became more popular as more tractors were sold. The Deere 55 series tractor released in 1986 was really the first compact utility tractor that offered the versatility of having, and using, three point attachments, a mid mower and a front loader at the same time.

This the listing on the jdparts website:

MID MOWER CYLINDER LIFT KIT (W/SELECTIVE CONTROL VALVE) - ST716963
655, 755, 756, 855 and 856 Compact Utility Tractors - PC2054 > 70 HYDRAULICS

Thanks, I'll look that up as it appears to be the solution. Obviously, I am new to this. It's my 5th tractor, but the first not named Craftsman that only tended to my suburban lawn. The 855 I traded for a one of the very first ever made (54th off the line). It is equipped as you mentioned with loader in front, mower underneath and box blade in back. All the other hydraulics front and back work well but struggling to figure out getting that deck raised out of the way. I've been reviewing the JD parts site but can never be sure if it is the right one needed.

Interesting. My 855 was also one of the first ever made, I think the serial number ended in 056, but will need to look that up. One of the problems you're going to run into with this tractor is that Deere made substantial changes to many components in year 2 of manufacture, ca.1987, so many of the parts on your machine are different than nearly every other 855 ever made.

Deere has done an excellent job of making sure there's an upgrade path for every component, so you will never be left high and dry with no ability to fix the thing. But sometimes the replacement of one part will require the replacement of other parts around that one part, to make it compatible with the later design. In one case, I broke a $400 or $600 steering knuckle casting, and because that casting was only made for the 1986 model year, my only repair path was to buy a whole new set of castings for the entire front axle, something like $2000. If I'd owned a 1987 or later 855, then I'd have been able to just replace the one $400-$600 casting.

So use the tractor while you have it, but I'd definitely be on the look-out for a later model year 855 to trade up, if you like that machine. It is a very good tractor for an assortment of "large yard" chores, I will admit, I liked mine a lot. Mine was 4wd (MFWD), and so I used it for snow plowing and many other chores.

What @TCowner explains sounds very cool, but I've honestly never seen that. The two 855's on which I worked (mine and a good friend's) both had only the original mower control. And yes, your 3-point hitch will go up and down with the mower deck, that's by design. You can tie the hitch up if you want, but most don't bother. Do put a bungie or spring between the lower 3-pt hitch arms, to keep them from rubbing against your tire lugs, but otherwise don't worry about it.

And as I described in a post above, you can lock the mower deck up by raising it and then turning the height stop wheel (by your left ankle) to highest setting. This will prevent the mower deck from dropping when you lower the 3-point hitch to use an aerator or other implement. But there's no way to lower the mower without also lowering the 3-pt, which means no leaving an implement on the tractor while mowing... unless you want the implement on the ground.

One huge advantage you have is that there were a lot of 855's made and sold. So if you think you're missing parts, you're probably within 10 or 20 minute's drive of several others, probably on various dealer lots. My local Deere dealer always has a few of these sitting in their used sale lot or maintenance/repaire queue, which I can drive over and look at if I'm wondering what's missing on my own.
