Why did they do that?
Model changeover is in progress and the model changeover brings huge new improvements to the pre-2025 model. 2025 model Y brings many new features and upgrades. They cost less to build and sell. So that leads to improve profit margins per unit sold.

I see, thanks for the information. So, part of the drop in sales was from lack of inventory and customers waiting on the new improved models?

I think anyone pretending politics is not a huge part of the explanation for any recent drop in Tesla sales, has their head in the sand. It seems very likely that Tesla sales must have previously relied on those who wouldn't have voted for the current administration, who may now be less than thrilled with Musk. And I don't think he's picking up a ton of new sales from the right, to replace that group.

Likewise with their international sales. Those residing in countries unhappy over the "trade wars" may be making a statement with their Euros or Pesos.

Doesn't look cheaper to buy one. Tesla is doing the same thing they did with the Cybertruck, making you pay a for a "Launch Series" premium package to get the new model Y. The new model Y Launch Edition is $59,990, which includes FSD. Old model Y without FSD is reduced now by $5,050 to $45,440, $14,550 less than the new model Y Launch edition. FSD adds $8,000. Looks like a fire sale to get rid of the old model Y before Tesla makes a new model Y available in something other than the Launch Edition.

Mizuho analysts said Tesla’s U.S. sales last month declined 2% year-over-year as the broader EV market rose by 16%, its China sales cratered 49% as EV sales in the country grew by 85% and its Germany sales tanked 76% as the European nation’s EV market expanded by 31%.

Mizuho analysts said Tesla’s... Germany sales tanked 76% as the European nation’s EV market expanded by 31%.
As someone who's been selling product into Europe for decades, interest in European sales has always sort of baffled me, as the numbers never seem to support the interest.

Case in point, Germany sales tanked by 76%, so the media idiots create all sorts of headlines about it, and everyone takes notice. But what tiny fraction of Tesla sales ever went to Germany?

Tesla sold 1.8 MILLION cars in each of the last two years (2023, 2024). And Germany bought 0.01 Million Tesla cars this year. Why does anyone really even care about European sales, when their numbers are always so pathetically low?

I have friends in Germany, who constantly send me crap like this. I always have to remind them that, while Europe makes a lot of noise and gets a lot of attention, their entire National economies are smaller than any one of our top ten cities.

Put more bluntly, Californians buy almost as many Tesla cars per week, as all of Germany combined does in a year! :p

I get the jist of your statement, but it's just a bit inaccurate...

2023 numbers

#1 NY: $2.299T (New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area)
... just NY, for a bit better accuracy: $1.286T
#10 Seattle: $0.518T (Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue)

Three European countries beat NY greater metro area:
France: $3.049T
UK: $3.332T
Germany: $4.430T

Spain, Russia, Italy all beat NYC when not considering the part of the metro area which isn't actually NYC, which is a more valid comparison for this.

I couldn't find a just-Seattle figure in the brief time I bothered looking for it, but Norway, Austria, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Turkey also beat Seattle metro GDP (edit: Seattle may be $0.487T of that $0.518T, unclear but stands to reason).

Not innaccurate at all! We're just slicing the numbers differently, me considering the average of all of Europe, with you focusing on just the top 3 countries (7% of European countries).

But maybe I should've stuck to talking about Tesla sales into Europe, as that was my point, and avoided the use of "economies" in general. It remains a fact that that no one should really care all that much if their Tesla sales drop 100%, let alone 75%. It's hardly a reason for panic, as their numbers have always been too insignificant to matter very much, especially when compared against the cost of doing business there (emissions, RoHS, REACH, etc.).

Having worked my whole life as a design engineer, I've not had the pleasure of working for any company that actually made much money by selling into Europe, given the high cost of doing business there. They always seem to represent a larger fraction of our work load, meeting ever-changing regulations and directives, with hardly ever the sales volume to support the increased engineering and quality requirements they impose.

I am trying to get front cap body parts for the recently discontinued Model Y body style.

After watching this video, I realize how lucky I am to have most of them all together. Jeff Lutz is awesome at describing the processes most likely going on inside of Tesla in this changeover process.
