Ford Recalling Super Duty Pickups, Issues 'Do Not Drive' Warning for Brakes That Can Suddenly Fail

My truck had this problem. I maybe drive my superduty 10 times a year. I took it to my cabin because I had to haul my side by side. I drove it up, unloaded the side by side, and parked the truck for 3 days. Get in to drive home and zero brakes. Nothing.

Now where my cabin is, there is no way a tow truck would make it up there. My dad was with me hauling a 18ft trailer load of wood home. I took the spare tire and drapted it with a chain over the back of the ramp. I then followed him down the mountain using the e brake and bumping into his trailer, using the tire as a buffer, to let him be my brakes down. It actually worked ok. Got to a point where we could get a tow truck in.

There was seal in the master cylinder that just gave way. I had to have the entire break system replaced. Ford covered it.

Let me tell you, it was the first time Ford left me stranded. But they made it right.
The E brake on my 97 is cable operated, don't know about yours however.

And military vehicles are exempt from emissions requirements.
Guess the environment really isn’t that important.
:)
100 percent correct, prior to retiring we got a load of diesel powered 6x6's in for final prep. They all had DDEC inline 6 cylinder engines, completely devoid of ANY emissions hardware. Interestingly however was alll the alternators were huge, water cooled units. Of course they all had slush boxes as well. You cannot expect a recruit to know how to shift gears......lol Guess is has to do with what is good for me and not thee...

Do you really want some guy losing a critical sensor in the middle of a firefight? Under those circumstances, let's KISS.

Good grief. Ask the EPA why they felt it necessary to require harmful emissions equipment in trucks and tractors. 🥸

How much DEF fluid have you used?

Maybe 1 jug every 1,500 miles? Like $10 bucks worth every 2 months? I lose more coins & change in my couch cushions and washing machine than that.
It’s really insignificant.
Have u ever cross contaminated the diesel with DEF?
No. You’d have to be a moron, or a flat-earther lunatic to do that. ;) 😁

Have u had to replace the DPF because it failed or was stolen?

Once, and I caught it because the seal was tampered with.

Trucks without wasteful DPF are more reliable, have more power, and last longer. That’s a fact, Jack.

While that’s true, but it’s a federal crime to tamper with emissions equipment and illegal in many states laws as well. I don’t have the option to do that when I know I can be DOT’ed at any given time. I don’t own a truck for fun.

Look chief, I don’t want the junk on my truck, either. However your comments about removing your emissions equipment while bragging Ford and trashing Ram come across pretty lame.
You buy a Ford, then remove $5,000 bucks worth of emissions equipment to make it more reliable? Sort of an oxymoron, wouldn’t you say? If Ford was so great, why would you need to remove it? Wasn’t it reliable with the Ford emissions equipment on it? You yourself said you never used it for work. So why would anything go wrong with it with emissions equipment left intact on a truck that lives an easy life?

I'll probably keep my 7.3.
You might be better off. If you drove a new 6.7L Ford diesel, you’d think your 7.3L was a slug and probably want to buy a 6.7L Ford. Then your bank account would be much smaller.

Night and Day difference in those trucks…..a true “wow” moment. They’ve doubled the HP/TQ and outfitted them with transmissions that are very well matched to the much higher power output.

I’ve had 2 7.3s and my Dad had one. Now he has a Ford 6.7 F-550 and I have a Ram 3500 Cummins 6.7. I have no regrets selling the 7.3s and he doesn’t either. A 7.3 is quite possibly the most overhyped engine on the planet. It’s fair to say a 7.3 with a Zf6 was probably the best truck on the road in 1999 but it’s not 1999 anymore. And the pre 1999 trucks are even more overhyped. Those cabs are tiny and only had a turbo for like 3 years. The old trucks ride horrible, turn horrible, start poorly in cold weather and make zero power. Another point that not many people mention is the Cummins exhaust brake works amazing and the old trucks have near zero engine braking capability. The power difference in the new trucks is obvious but the better ride, better turning radius, better transmissions ac cooled seats, factory backup camera makes for a much better experience. I don’t love the emissions diesels of course I’d rather not but they haven’t been a problem.

Just classify your truck as a military vehicle and you will be fine removing the junk emissions. :)
And no matter the brand of diesel truck I would have removed the junk.

I could use (and have used) the backseat in my 97 crew cab for a bed. In fact I take the backseat out when we put in the camper and the 12 volt fridge and all the 'stuff' goes back there.

I agree that new trucks have come a long way and went way up in price as well. Mine was paid for a long, long time ago and today it's worth what I paid for it in 97. Ford OBS 4 door trucks, especially 4wd with the 7.3 are highly sought after and desireable trucks to own. Sort of like my pre emissions Kubota's.

Why?
I have run a Ram for 5.5 years with ZERO emissions related issues. Not saying it’ll stay that way, but it’s an over-hyped, non-issue.
These systems have been on trucks for 14 years!

I just bought mine a couple months ago but it’s got 82k miles and bone stock exhaust. If it messes up it will probably get lighter but I don’t see the point of spending money to delete it while it still works. I paid $8,000 for the 7.3 I had and it was actually pretty nice. An old truck makes sense at that point. But it baffles me how much people are willing to pay for old trucks that are far inferior to newer ones.
