Ford Recalling Super Duty Pickups, Issues 'Do Not Drive' Warning for Brakes That Can Suddenly Fail

Neighbor tows a 12k tag trailer for work up and down California and every 3 to 4 years buys new truck… he has owned several fords, 3 GMC and Dodge.

The 7.3 never needed anything other than oil changes.

The next 2 Fords had good performance but too many trips under warranty to the shop… the diesel GMC required an entire power plant install at 7k mikes…

The next was a GMC gasser no problems but not a diesel… and really used fuel but gas is much less than diesel here.

The Dodge is the current truck and fairing ok.

Hands down the 7.3 just ran.

He had no issues trading the problem trucks as they were still under warranty and dealer said the factory pays for the repairs.

Well,
My 2012 7.3 dually is paid for
Fairfax Va. property taxes on it dropped to $0 after it turned 20.
Insurance is not too bad
It hauls and does everything I need EXCEPT

The density of traffic and downsizing of individual parking slots has made it so I end up having to park in the hinterlands with long walks. It would probably be VERY costly to shorten it and narrow it.
You might be better off. If you drove a new 6.7L Ford diesel, you’d think your 7.3L was a slug and probably want to buy a 6.7L Ford. Then your bank account would be much smaller.

Night and Day difference in those trucks…..a true “wow” moment. They’ve doubled the HP/TQ and outfitted them with transmissions that are very well matched to the much higher power output.

I don't have "needs" to haul more than my loaded 12K Hudson trailer at 70 mph, which it's been doing fine since I bought the truck to tow that trailer. And I don't mind driving with the speed of traffic, I'm retired, and was raised driving in Vermont (speed limit other than interstate is still 50 mph).
And the size of my bank account is my problem. But a new truck would not consume a significant portion.

My 7.3 has had a lot of "problems". Windshield wiper blade replacement, shocks, brakes, tires, oil (15 quarts every change). But no engine problems (knock on wood), get's 15mpg around town, 12 mpg when towing.

Like I said, just don’t drive one. You’ll want it.

You are correct, it's on it's third A/C compressor because the seals dried out (but that was because I used to never use the A/C). Now I leave the A/C on all the time and haven't had a compressor failure in probably 8 years.

I just use it when I need it, but never as a daily driver. I did drive it to work twice when heavy snow was predicted during the day, but otherwise it doesn't see snow or rain either unless absolutely necessary.
2004 to 2010 just about put Ford out of the diesel business. They had so many problems it was unbelievable! Then just when you think things are going well you get a $6000 shopbil for replacing a $60 fuel sensor. Yes the cab has to be raised to get to the fuel pump.

I drive a 2000 7.3. With 360000 miles it does have a need for occasional attention but it has been hands down the best pickup I’ve ever owned.

Much of these driveline troubles are the result of the govt regulations of emissions and efficiency across all of the manufacturers. This includes the resulting computer(s) management.
One has to admit that the overall durability, efficiency and power has easily doubled since the days you could open the hood and actually repair it.
What I can't get with it what they cost and why people pay it.😉
edit; and why 80%? of pickup owners don't need a pickup!

When Deming tried promoting quality control mindset to the big 3 in the 1950-60's he got laughed out of the office. The management's consensus at the time was the arrogant "consumers will buy any crap we give them". The Japanese companies embraced the quality control mindset and started making better, more reliable vehicles as a result.

You can't blame the government for everything. Blame short term thinking, the used car salesman running things and the cheap ass bean counters and lawyers injecting their share of stupidity in the process. Oh wait, I just described the government...
