Cold weather start, with glow plugs and block heater. Why does my tractor not start at minus 20 C?

Years ago, here at minor hockey league games, they had free booster services after the game. People would go to the game, and after drawing the battery down some on starting, their cold battery doesn't get enough time to take charge, well, the outcome is easy to figure.

Had an old Allied seven ft at the acreage here. Was on the back of a Massey 1105. It was 36 inches high, had a large and deep fan. Much larger than my current new model seven ft. Sold it with the tractor, $500. Might be a model to look for. You could search Schulte blowers, they make the...

Cold weather start, with glow plugs and block heater. Why does my tractor not start at minus 20 C?

My 2017 Massey 1742 had trouble starting below -25c, even with the block heater plugged in. Had the tech out to check, all tests were good. Seems as with all things nowadays, manufacturers go with the minimum required. My battery was too small for the effect of losing capacity when the temp...

New Hobart 140.. can I weld on bucket hooks?

The idea given here is STICK with 1/8 7018. Hardly a glue gun approach. Before I got into 220 v Lincoln migs, I had a Linc 135 plus. With enough experience I would weld those hooks with that machine.

There's not enough Eddie Bauer to make me give up my cab. In -30 with a good stiff wind and the road is blocked, I'd pay to see someone clear that in an open station. There is a world beyond the " Sunshine Belt"

    Skid steer tree saw

Got lucky and scored a couple of 6x3/8 x 8 ft long pieces of ar 500. Plan is to make them six ft with a 4x4x3/8 angle backer. Teeth will be cut with an angle grinder. Also a single claw grapple at the tip to help move branches around. Got my ssqa plate yesterday. I'll lay the parts out and...

Building an Off Road Dirt Track with a Dozer

Pretty sweet. We have a bit of a track on the acreage here, managed to use the existing topography for variation. We are seriously lacking berms though. Got a skid steer late last fall so they're coming in the near future. Looking forward to the next video.

Zero turn vs hst tractor reliability

On the reliability side, last year I upgraded from a forty year old Deines ZT to a Toro Titan 60 inch with MyRide. Love the ride, hope it lasts somewhere near as long. Toro has been building mowers for a long time.

    Skid steer tree saw

What kind of saw action are you looking for? I'm in the process of doing a tractor/skidsteer saw with flat horizontal blades. Commercial ones are expensive. See pics of a sawfish. Vids on you tube show a fairly easy build.

Color me chicken. I would be mowing up and down on a ZT mower.

    Grapple build question

A little different take on home built. Mine was fabricated from old rod weeder parts. No bushings, just big bolts. Made this as a grapple/ rock digger. Bottom spikes are 3/4 inch thick. Tops are 5/8. Good quality steel in those old implements. Not perfect but the price was right.

    z turn advice

A good deal depends on your application. Is your property a fine lawn or repurposed pasture? Mine is the latter. I replaced a forty year old Deines with a Toro Titan 60 inch with MyRide seat suspension. Never going back to a regular rider or ZT without some form of suspension. MyRide is...

Zero turn thoughts on common models

Wow, lots of responses in a short time. Popular subject for sure. My two bits. Bought a Toro Titan 60 with MyRide last year to replace the forty year old Deines. Love the ride on this thing. New snow

Finally quite snowing and blowing. Worked the blower pretty hard, blew out the bearings where the shaft goes through the ssqa plate. Wondered about the bearings being too close, back to back at the short shaft with the drive sprocket. A bit more sittn' n thinkin' is in order. Couple of options...

    New snow

Wind was on my side with the road to the highway, just a few finger drifts. Beside the house was a different story. Had to put the blower back on.

    New snow

Still snowing and blowing. Three ft drifts around buildings, couple ft in the driveway. With the wind direction change I'm sure my drive to the highway is blocked. I'll get to it after breakfast. Lots of highways closed.

    Lawn tractor vs ZT

Tractors don't make good mowers. Rough stuff, sure, grass, no. My choice was a Toro Titan 60 inch with the My Ride system. Turned a three hr chore into an hr and a half of cruising the yard.

Looking for a self feeding chipper:

BIL just got a Woodland Mills with a power infeed roller. Runs on an 18 hp Kubota. He asked me last fall, I told him to keep away from the "Chuck and Duck" types. Yup, they self feed, but as has been said, quite violently. I have a Champion stand alone, it's bad enough within it's capabilities.

    New snow

Snow is blowing like crazy. Glad it's not cold. -2c. Getting some good sized drifts around the yard. I would sooner see a nice long rain but right now any moisture is good. Both dug outs are at late fall levels and the sloughs around here are all but dried up. This snow will help, the ducks...

    Tractor mounted tree cutter/saws

I'm just in the process of building a Tree Buster type for the fel. Cutting at ground level and being able to mow over the area without fear is right on the money. No fast spinning blade or chain, easy to control. I'll probably add a little single point grapple near the tip. Lots of ideas...

Need to get up to speed on ZTs

Just a quick note here. Needed to replace my old Deines ZT with something more body friendly. Purchased a Toro Titan 60 inch with My Ride after a couple laps around the dealer's lot. All I can say is give one a try. Toro has made mowers for a long time.
  156. M

Choosing between sub-compact and compact options.

No mention of location. Long drive, how cold, how much snow? Compact with a cab and heat will make a miserable chore into a pleasant job. I agree on the ZT mower for grass. Tractors don't make good mowers regardless of some opinions. It's an expensive mistake to get a Swiss army knife and...

  159. M

    Vision

I’ve had a vision for a while. I really like the Perfect Tree Saw type of attachment. So the quest begins. Found some eight ft x3/8 pieces of ar 500 steel for the blades. Figure six ft long should do. Will cut some teeth with the angle grinder, back them up with heavy angle.

Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Pictures of your snow weapons

55 Acres, Wooded, Hilly, and Snowy!

Regarding the cab in the bush. I'll gladly let the mirrors and window frames get knocked around than get jabbed or worse by an errant branch. Pretty easy to make some extra clearance with a cordless pole saw. Going slow will push a lot out of the way.

    Tractor Shopping

I installed a diverter on the rear remote on my Massey. Hoses to the front are easy. Use the system for the front blade, grapple, snow blower chute and a lift cyl on my forks. At the rear so far it handles the verge mower and the lift gate on the land plane. Not too complicated to operate if...

    Tractor Shopping

Looks like 50 hp tractor country. Grapple would be a must. I've been looking at the Real tree saw, more on how to build one as the prices are way out there. Would be able to take down trees with a flush cut, leave the stump and mow over to maintain trails.

    Tractor Shopping

I just have to chuckle to myself when I read about guys who don't do a little research on little tractors and dozers. The design of the spindly arms on a small tractor are meant for moving loose material. The arms on a skid steer rest against the frame when pushing or digging. I've seen the...

    Snow blower evolution

The rear pto front blower struck my fancy after straining with a rear mount. Found an almost new Farm King 66 inch for a super price and went to work. I wanted a loader ssqa mounted blower as I still use the loader for deer feed. Took a bit of seat of the pants engineering but it works good so far

Best CUT attachment for this kind of earthmoving?

Check out Squatch253 on you tube. He uses an old "tumblebug" rotary scraper along with a small plow to move and level areas. I got hooked on the idea and happened to come upon three of these. Some old pics of road construction in NSW show this implement in action. Just looks sweet.

Need to change input/output shaft direction

Just a heads up on a problem that popped up on my 1742 cabbed model. Being a heavy guy, there's lots of stress on the step bolts. Had the front bolt snap. FEL blower update

The problem and the solution. The chain coupler has enough motion for small alignment faults. The joint doesn稚 move like the pto. Same as I have in the drive to the blower.

    Weldig/ machining related.

Not new to Mitutoyo. My old Combi Mike has the writing worn off from use. Still accurate though. The vernier has v shape on the beam, quality throughout. Favoured metric as the primary because I worked on vw early in my mechanic career.

    FEL blower update

Blower is great before the shear bolts break at my pto to chaincase joint. Seems I have an alignment problem. Something has shifted with use, the flanges are no longer aligned. Actual fix is pretty easy, another chain type coupler, same as on the bottom. Have to take the whole unit off...

    Weldig/ machining related.

Merry Christmas to me. Just purchased a Mitutoyo Digimatic Absolute six inch caliper. Have been using cheap and mediocre calipers for years, finally got fed up. Lots of tube vids, all compare to the standard in the industry. Buy once scenario now, woohoo.

Final bits coming together. Easiest seemed to be limit chains. The cylinder pins were not long enough so had to make new ones. Highly doubt the little bolts in the ends would hold the cylinders. A little tig project from a couple years ago. Figured I needed to upgrade my fish finder, so did some research on rov units. Commercially made ones were way out of my realm, so I built one. Has three thrusters, two cameras and 100 ft tether. One cam is a go pro knock-off, the other is a live...

Well the snow fell and lots was blown away. Just enough to give the blower a little test. All went well till the pto shaft came off the tractor end.
