    Alternate Hydraulic Oil and Filter

I'd use what they recommend in that tractor after you get the old oil replaced and cleaned out well. May not be much difference, but there "can" be. Lubricants and fluids have their own spectrum of stuff you couldn't fit into a volume of encyclopedias. Some have detergents, some have anti...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Good post, Eddie! I agree! Right now the 10-12 foot cutters are more designed for lower horsepower tractors in the 45-50hp range. They are easier to get spinning from a start-up, and not HD at all. I have my 12' Viper on the back of my 75hp tractor, and will cheer the day they make a HD...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

That's kinda what I do. But in the past couple of years, I've leased some good hay fields. I have them for my own use with cattle, and to sell what hay is left over. I do all the work on them myself, except the cutting and baling. I have a great guy that comes and bales when I have a field...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

There's a huge difference in my 15 and 12 for what I use them for. The 15, I use on very large ranches that have quite a bit of open areas, and not many tight spots between trees I have to shred around. The 12' cuts in tighter spots much easier, and I can cut a lot more, and leave a lot less...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Now... If ONLY I could get a 12' cutter like that 15.72 Woods! I know they cater that width of cutter to lower horsepower tractors that probably don't see many hours use in a year's time. But I sincerely think that a genuine HD 12' cutter would find a home in many places.

I think you have a very good idea of how it's done! (y) Recently, I traded my old Woods BW180XHD in on a new Woods 15.72... While the similarities of the basics are the same, I'm REALLY impressed with the improvements to the whole re-design. When I brought my old one in to trade it in, the...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Really, I don't put much stock into what a cutter is rated for, other than to scale how heavy duty a cutter is. If a cutter is rated at 4.5" the company must have decent faith it's pretty heavy duty. If the cutter is rated at 1.5", then it'll do okay to mow your lawn with.. maybe. If you don't...

Yeah, I probably should have said "beefier" gear boxes. They are probably all China now. I know those little round ones they have on the Viper 12' are not very good. Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

They probably are real good cutters for lighter duty projects. Looked at the JD awhile back, but it's light duty as well. May end up taking anther look at the Bush Hog 12' because it has the drive lines and gear boxes to rate cutting 3" growth. Interesting that my 12' Viper and the Bush Hog...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Thanks so much for your engineering contributions to this thread! Yeah, I know you can't compare cut on a CTL front cutter and a batwing cutter... Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

On a good cutter, all 3 cutting decks don't turn the same rotation direction, so when you turn one way or the other, you may notice a poorer cut. Mine cuts better when I make a turn, or circle a tree counter clockwise. The only difference would be the direction the blades are spinning. I also...

Why Can't Someone Make a Good 12' Batwing Cutter?

Yeah, I tend to match the horsepower with the cutter, to minimize slowdown and maximize cut performance. But I do several things as well. John, yessir... You have the same issue I do. I've gone to using 00wt Cornhead Grease in the gear boxes of the Viper now. I Won't Operate My Equipment in Wet Weather

What was it...? Old Jeeps? Can't remember, but you could switch the wires that operate the fan and it would turn the other way. Just happened to think of that. Old guy used a Jeep motor on a water well, and needed the thing to blow in reverse, and someone told him that, and he said it worked.

12' Flex Wing Cutters, what have you had success with?

It's not really locked with the hydraulic cylinders as the constant flow of hydraulic pressure is not present after you lower the wings. The hydraulic cylinders are "one way" cylinders, and all they do is raise the wings. There's no pressure to lower them. Only the weight of the wing itself...

12' Flex Wing Cutters, what have you had success with?

On the batwings when moving over uneven ground, the wings still move up and down with the terrain. 12' Flex Wing Cutters, what have you had success with?

A batwing conforms to terrain on each cutting deck. One wing can be cutting high, the center low, and the opposite wing even lower. The batwing will meet the terrain very well, as long as the changes are halfway gradual. Sharp rises, or holes don't cut as well. This is cutting the low spot...

Good job on that feeder! Yeah, the deck on the Modern Ag products are excellent. I've got their 12' Viper batwing, and while I love how it cuts when it's running correctly, I've had lots of failures with it as well. (splitter gearbox replaced, one side gear box replaced, wheel bearings...

    Muffler Life?

It seems to me like a DPF will sure shorten the life of an exhaust system. Not sure if they are all burning that hot, but if you see one re-gen at night, chances are the entire exhaust system will be glowing orange from the heat... That HAS to shorten the life of exhaust parts.

How Many Have More Than One Tractor?

I have two brothers... Both have a small tractor. One has a 25hp JD and the other has a 25hp Kubota. As a joke, I remind them a couple times a year that my lawn mower has more horsepower than their "tractors"... One brother in particular is probably too scared to run anything bigger...

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

My rear spear has a 48" spike and two shorter ones. But my short ones are underneath the main spike. I just think I can get as much lift as I need with the hydraulic top link. Should solve the issue. I don't have trouble with the front loader spear because it has 2 48" spears and as much lift...

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

Yessir, you are correct about the bottom pin difference. May take a little grinding and perhaps a bushing to make them interchangeable, but it's not much work.

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

Toplink mount has 3 hole settings. I'm in the bottom one. The bale spear itself is for Cat 1 or Cat 2 either one. The pins are on top of each other where the top of the toplink mounts. I can use either, but either one doesn't make a perceptible difference in lift height. For some reason, in my...

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

I'm pretty sure I have everything set up to get maximum lift. ;) Aside from the 3pt hitch itself, there's a knob that allows some adjustment on hydraulic lift with the lifting arms which link to the lower arms. Yeah, you are right, The toplink is extended because when I retract it, the point...

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

I hear ya, but the Case and New Holland tractors don't have as much lift height as some others. My Mahindra 6075, that I no longer have, would lift much higher on the 3pt, and I never had an issue. Used that tractor for moving hay a LOT. But since I've gone all Blue, I'm hoping that...

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

Thanks for the link! Yeah, both my tractors are Cat 2, so that is one question solved. I'll get out and measure the 75hp toplink for ordering the hydraulic replacement. The toplinks on it and my 120hp are similar in length, so if I need it on the 120, it should pin right up and work okay.

Hydraulic Top Link? Moving Hay~UPDATE! Problem Solved!

I've been cussing CNH products for years for not making a 3 point hitch system that comes up high enough to move hay bales reliably. 🤬 The issue is I can't adjust the top link to lift the bale high enough if the bale isn't really firm, or had a somewhat wallowed out center from being moved...

How Many Have More Than One Tractor?

I've looked at those, and see where you'd really put one to good use in the hay business! I've got a tifton85 field now that yields really well, but until I get some more dedicated hay fields leased or established, I just make do with round balers. Mostly what I use my CTL for is clearing...

How Many Have More Than One Tractor?

You have some neat stuff there! What kind of business are you in with your equipment? I have a 6 foot cutter for my CTL, but honestly, I only use the cutter for certain things like cutting along fence lines and in between trees and such. You put 90hp at 2500 plus rpm's behind 6 foot of cutter...

How Many Have More Than One Tractor?

Hay Dude made a great point about having a skid steer as a compliment to multiple tractors as well! (y) A good tracked skid steer can take a load off of wear and tear tractors shouldn't get anyway. Like digging a pond... Or clearing thick brush from an old oil well for plugging operations...

How Many Have More Than One Tractor?

I hear ya! Yeah, sometimes I keep one tractor hooked up with a cutter, and another with bale spears just to use them that way and keep from hooking up again. I DO have a tracked skid steer, and it's unbelievably useful around here. (y) If I have both of my tractors engaged elsewhere, I even...
