All diesel engines should have the air bled out of the fuel systems. Air is hard on injection pumps and injectors

I had a similar issue on my 220D. I don't know if you know or not, but the glow plugs also come on with the key in the start position. There should be no problem using a momentary switch to engage the starter solenoid

Put at least 2 filters inline. A 20 or 30 micro. With a water trap. And finish with a 2 micron going into your equipment. One tank I have 5 filters on. A starter, 30 micron and then 2 - 20 microns & 2 - 2 microns in parallel. Add a lubricity additive and a big killer to every fill

European fuel is better than we get in the states. I would guess your Ausy fuel is also better than ours.

A good sized local truck stop, that's particular about their fuel got a bad load or 2 in. I don't remember what happened, if bio was added instead of antigel or what, but there was gelled up trucks all over the place. It cost them a lot of business and it wasn't even their fault.

I'd stay with the electric. Not much needed. Nipples and maybe a reducing bushing or 2 I would go with a filter housing for 1" filters. I have a few 3/4" filters, but have trouble finding the 3/4 npt filters now and am switching to 1".

I have no idea why a 15 gpm pump would make a difference. I prefer to have my fuel filtered as well as possible before it goes into the equipment.

In my experience, most of the diesels were 24 volt up until about 1968 or so. I have never seen a 12 volt diesel that was OEM from the early years.

Many diesels will run without a lift pump. Often it shortens the life of the injection pump. I would make sure there is a lift pump on it.
