06 Dodge diesel, any pointers?

I have an 05 regular cab 2500. Same engine and transmission. The 05s with the G56 transmission and all the 06 manuals are geared too low for cruising empty. For heavy towing, they are geared perfectly.

A couple of things bother me about the truck's description. The somewhat soiled interior and the worn out rear tires make me suspicious that it may have been abused. Unless I am mistaken, all 2500s and 3500s came with a bed liner standard. I wonder where that one is?

Somebody wholesaled that truck off because they didn't want it on their lot. I advise caution.

I hava a 06 megacab ctd with auto and love it 35,000 miles in 15 months milage is still improving about 19.2 on a trip with bed loaded and about 17.5 flat towing my wives wrangler or our travle trailer (27' hybred) .

I would double check short bed to see if it can tow fifth wheel I know mine won't

Have you looked at Chevy, GMC and Ford medium duty trucks. Lots of great trucks there with lots of good options

We bought our 2500 new (06 model) and no bedliner was included. I wonder if that might be a regional thing? We just had a spray-on model done and are reasonably happy with it (it has a few chips).

I agree on the caution.

Tom, the short bed is still 6'3". We tow a gooseneck with zero problems. I know a 5th wheel is slightly different, but zero problems for a gooseneck.

Might be. I couldn't find one without a bedliner. I bought my 05 at end of model year, so I looked at the 06 models too. They all had bedliners as well.

My early model 05 didn't have a bedliner and it's a 1 ton. I believe the engine was rated for the same torque on both transmissions for the 05's, the window sticker claimed 610ft lbs with the 6 speed manual. Maybe they changed the ratings due to the G56 transmission. Mine's got the NV5600.

If I decide to drive around 55 and go fairly easy on the throttle I can eek out about 21-22 on the highway. Around 70mph empty I can get about 19 if I keep it at a steady pace and don't hammer it around anybody (I can't drive like that normally so it's usually about a mpg less). Pulling my little 20' fiberglass cuddy cabin boat, my mileage drops to about 16mpg or so if I don't get too wild and crazy on the speed (65 or less). I get about 14-15 pulling a friend's 28' travel trailer under similar conditions.

Driving 70+ with a trailer is what kills the mileage. It's bad enough you're trying to push a tow vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick down the road that fast but you also have attached a large sail to the back of it. Even with the current rig I would think you could pick up a few "free" miles per gallon by slowing down 10-15mph.

Nope, mine is 610 also with the G56, but you get better mileage than me, all things being equal, since the G56's sixth gear is a lower OD ratio than the NV5600's. :(

I here they have fixed that for 07.

That is too much money. I am a Dodge and Chevy dealer from Missouri. I am not trying to sell a truck here, but just so you understand how high that truck is, I can sell a new 07' 2500 4x4, Quad cab, SLT, 6.7 Cummins/6-speed manual for for about $8,000-$9,000 less than that. That truck down here if it was A1 shape would retail for maybe $26-$27k. If you are really interested in it and would like to know some history send me the VIN and I can run a service history on it for you.

I'm pondering getting a used diesel, as we are purchasing a travel trailer next summer. I have an 01 Ford Expedition 5.4, towing capacity 6900 lbs. Yet, the 28-29 ft tag alongs we've looked at have a GTWR of ~7000 lbs. My Expedition screams pulling 6000 lbs of loaded tandem axle utility trailer, so I can't imagine what towing at it's limit for days on end would be like. I've read several posts here bemoaning the poor towing of the 5.4, and I know, the Expedition is only a half ton chassis. I've put a Superchips reprogrammer, K&N filtercharger with Amsoil nanofibre air filter, and Magnaflow cat back on it. Sounds great. More power. About .5 mpg better. But it still needs to rev to tow a heavy load, and makes horrible mileage doing so. I got 9mpg towing the utility at 70mph into a headwind. So.....

A local dealer has an 06 Dodge 2500 4x4 6 speed Cummins quad cab short box they just got in. It's a Missouri truck, 40,000 miles. Lots of American used vehicles come to Canada, not quite sure why. I test drove it today. I like it! What I noticed was:

Pros: engine bay clean as new. Love the feel of the 6 speed. The torque!!!! The quiet. The ride was even really nice for 3/4 ton. Chassis has no rust. No 5th wheel hitch holes in the box. 5.9 non EGR diesel.

Cons: scratched up box. Worn rear tires. A rust spot in the box. Interior a bit stained. Mid level interior ( My Expedition is an Eddie Bauer, I guess I'm spoiled :) ) Price: $39,800 Can. Which is now $41800 US at our current exchange. The dealer said they hadn't detailed it yet as it just came in yest. He is replacing the 2 rear tires.

I know pricing is always variable due to local market conditions. For you cogniscenti, are there any specific pitfalls to this model/year I should look out for? I know the 4 speed auto is the weak link in this model, which is why I test drove this one. I think I may even have the Mrs. on board! Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Try this place it will give you some idea as to what they are selling for . I to say that price is high

don't know if they have autotrader in canada or not but.........
