Ok, now things have gotten real difficult. There are tons of tractors out there in the 100+ pto hp in 2wd. I think it would be best to stay with a 6 cyl. and should have ROPS or cab. Is there some place to get specs on tractors such as hp, transmission features, and cyl? What is the difference between a power shift and quadrange?

There are two sites that I know of that have tractor specs. One is Tractordata.com and the other is Tiscoparts.com (used to also be named tractortips.com)

TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors is a good, but not perfect source to research different tractor models. Another member has posted a good explanation of the different types of transmissions, can't remember who or what forum it's in though. I think it is JerryG.

Like you I want a larger tractor. I have a 2005 21 hp (engine) Kubota B7510HST with the LA302 FEL (4-ft wide bucket) and a 1966 45 hp engine MF-135 diesel. Am presently looking for a 70-hp JD. Have my eye on the 3020. Lotsa fun trying to find the right one and making a deal.

Found a 1970 JD 5020, no 3pt, 133ptohp, cab no air/heat, std shift 8forward 4 reverse, 1000rmp only, new rubber, clean, no smoke, runs good, 2wd w/ diff lock, asking $9900.00. Any thoughts about this machine?

If you are a collector then grab it. If you want to use it then walk away. The 5020 is a great tractor but without the 3pt and no AC it will limit your usefulness. Even taking the doors off the cab in the summer the cab will still be very hot. And if you ever want to use anything that requires a 3pt you will not be able to unless you buy another tractor. Keep looking as there are a lot out there to choose from.

I agree with Robert. No AC for the cab and bareback are deal breakers for me. Great tractor though. Would be a nice unit for your needs.

Should sell for $7000-$8000.

Suggest you invest $15 and buy the 2007 edition of The Official Tractor Blue Book from Amazon.com. It's invaluable if you're looking to buy used iron.

Ok, good points and I was thinking the same thing. Kinda getting 1/2 the baby at full price. Will keep looking. Thank you! And, thanks to those for the info on trnasmissions. I have read it, and now have at least some idea of what I am looking at. In my mind, when considering a tractor this old, the simpler the transmission the better due to possible repair costs. I have also asked all the dealers I have spoken with and they all seem to lean toward JD as far as parts availability and service. Did find an international 1066 but I think they want too much for it, $13,900, and it looks kinda rough.

If you are looking on the cheaper side for excellent older tractors look at a Deere 4430 or 4440. Readily available parts, easy tractors to work on, great resale value, and VERY reliable tractors. Usually a good one with 5-10k hours can be found less than $15k. We just sold one in excellent condition, fresh overhaul at 8k hours, new air conditioning unit, cab was in excellent shape, and hydraulics were also recently overhauled for $14,500. For what you want to do that tractor would have lasted you 20 years.

For Batwing mowers the Deere mowers are nice but for less $ look at the Landpride. You can usually find them at substantial discounts that are only a couple years old and lots of life left. Just be careful on the used ones to really look at the gearboxes, those can be really spendy to rebuild.

5020's are BIG, heavy, loud, fuel hogging, clumsy monsters. They were ok back in their day as heavy tillage tractors is wide open country, but for a bush hogging tractor, I'd think they would be near the BOTTOM of the list. Later model 5020's were 141 hp, but their weight per hp ratio wasn't much to brag about. The 5020 was 531 cu. in. When the 30 series was introduced in 1973, the 5020 was up-gunned to 175hp and re-badged as the 6030. Most of them would actually dyno at well over 225hp. That overcame the weight to hp ratio issues, but they were still loud lumbering giants. Many were re-fit with 619 cu. in engines when it was time to overhaul. They often dynoed at well over 275 hp. That much power was hard to harness with a 2wd, even with ballasted weights in excess of 20,000lbs. In 1978, Deere introduced the 4840 to replace the 6030. It was "only" a true 180 hp, but had the state of the art (in those days) SoundGaurd cab. The 4840 had the new 466 cu. in. engine that was the staple of the Deere big ag tractor line for years.
