I'll second these...great fun with decent punch, although I'm guessing they might penetrate deer hide at close range.
However, they don't have enough juice to cycle any semi-auto I've tried them in. A great alternative - pump action 22's. I shoot the CB's out of an old 1906 Winchester gallery gun. With the tube magazine under the barrel, the shorter CB's provide a pretty good capacity - around 15, if I recall correctly.
Loads of fun, fairly accurate, and you can whip out rounds almost as fast as a semi. I've actually found this setup quieter than my airguns - I've picked off gophers in the backyard, and never had the neighbors notice.

Spend your money on an inexpensive .22 caliber rifle.
No matter what animal you intend to shoot, the animal deserves a quick "death".
Any type of air rifle, no matter what the velocity, can have different "effects" on "rat" size animals.
With a .22, you can buy sub sonic amunition (CB longs is what I use). Using sub sonic ammo, the "bang" will be about as loud as a pellet rifle.
Hypothetical (sp?), I can use my Remington Matchmaster with a Unertle (sp?, too lazy to get the weapon out of the safe to check spelling /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) scope, (the scope is "sighted in" in with sub sonic ammo) in a residential neighorhood (sp?) with houses no closer than 30 meters, I can put down a goose at 50 meters (head shot) at 8am and no one will know (as mentioned, this is hypothetical!).
You would be very surprised what sub sonic .22 ammo can do.
Stay away from the Argintine and Spanish ammo though, not enough velocity for a "quick" kill.
Again, you need to "sight" the scope or sights to the particular ammo you are using. The trajectory is "very different" between all sub-sonic and "regualr" velocity .22's.
You could probably buy a "cheap" marlin for less than a "good" gammo air rifle, and you can also shoot "regular" .22' if you wanted too.
P.S I have a gammo that I gave to my "grandfather-in law"), so I can draw a comparison between the two.

Rem makes a sub-sonic long (750fps) which I seem to recall will autoload. They make slightly more racket though but are HP's. (Not sure a HP really opens up at that velocity but I guess Rem does) I keep those in my old Win pump cuz it doesn't seem to like feeding the shorts.
Out of curiousity, do you have to get the gophers at night ... mine seem pretty shy during the day.

Good thoughts on the .22's and subsonics. We all kinda got off the track of the question (thanks to me I guess). PBinWA was just wanting to spank an antlered rat (aka deer) to keep them from his garden or whatever. Once deer season arrives I think he has more than spanking in mind /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif (At least that's how I read it)

Heh...I've got a bit of Bill Murray in me. Hate those suckers, and I can get a bit obsessed. The routine usually goes something like this.
First, I notice the dogs in the back yard doing a little gopher hunting. It keeps them entertained for hours, but they've only brought back one dead critter in 5 years.
After they finally give up, the gophers will usually try to plug the tunnel the hounds have been digging at. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. At my place, they are quite active during the day.
At this point, I grab the 22 and a chair, along with a hat and some sort of libation. I position myself about 10' away from the cleared out hole, with a view right down it. Rifle across my lap, sitting silenty, waiting for those beady eyes to make an appearance.
You gotta be quick - you only see the head for a second, then just dirt being pushed up. I nail them about half the time.
Kinda like land fishing... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I thought the subject was rats, not deer.
Please, please, don't ever forget, what ever you point a weapon (firearm) at and intend to discharge, you should intend to kill quickly.
Anything else can lead to "bad" habits or worse, injuring an animal /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I know of the Caddyshack Syndrome. Mine manifested when I moved to this property in '93 ... ground squirrel towns everywhere!!! You could not look anywhere without seeing them scurrying around like ants. I became so obsessed that I put up blinds, took screens out of each room of the house, layed on the ridge of my roof ... what fun those days were. Unfortunately (?) I literally killed them all within a quarter mile radius ... unfortunately, because that was the most fun I have ever had in my life (excluding beer, tractors and girls) and I don't see more than one a year now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif And with those CB's nobody could hear what I was doing ... even in the next room /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have had one of the Gamo high velocity air rifles for several years. I would be concerned about possibly penetrating the hide if the "rat" is too close--maybe 40-50 yards?
BTW, the rifle has never given me any mechanical problems, other than breaking a cheap scope. It is capable of better accuracy than I am. One negative point--the trigger guard on mine is plastic and broke.
