I have a Benjamin\Sheridan around here somewhere that I used to use a lot in FLorida. Great little gun until the scope broke off the scope rail....but they replaced the gun FREE...wow was I impressed. Locally I use a 10\22 for the ground hogs---I don't want them in the barn chewing on wires.
For your problem I really think the paintball gun would be the best (and most fun). I have a modified Spyder (relatively cheap and available everywhere now. It is very quiet with an aftermakerket barrel and it will really shoot a lot of shots per second with essentially no kick or alteration of your aim. It is a bit like shooting with tracers mixed in..you can sort of "walk" the shots to your target. It is also a blast seeing the paint splat where you tag it! And you know you will NOT break skin or actually injure the animal...except an accidental eye shot. They only shoot at about 300fps so you can see the balls in the air. You could also rent one (may want to try a Tippman brand) to see how you like it. Just my $.02
