( Good thoughts on the .22's and subsonics. We all kinda got off the track of the question (thanks to me I guess). PBinWA was just wanting to spank an antlered rat (aka deer) to keep them from his garden or whatever. Once deer season arrives I think he has more than spanking in mind /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif (At least that's how I read it) )

I'd say you read it right. ; )

Unfortunately, these rats have the law on their side until the fall. I'd just like to sting them. That's why I'm wondering about the range. I'd like to be able to hit them at 50-100 yards but not closer. If they are closer then I can set the dogs on them (good exercise). For some reason (nature is smarter than us) the deer seem to be invisible to the dogs at longer distances.

Trust me, I'd like to point something more powerful at them but that isn't allowed right now.

There has been a rash of drive-by bayonettings in my neighborhood since the sunsetting of the "assault" rifle ban. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif LOL

IMO Assault is an action- not a style of gun

Yeh, I understand. As was cited previously, it is a fine line between enough force to spank and wound from penetration. If it were me, though the cost is a bit high, I would give the paintball a try. But at the range you're looking at the Gamo may work just fine. Dunno. Cheers!

I have the ideal weapon for you. I own a beeman/sheridan blue streak pellet gun in 0.20 caliber or 5mm. It is a wood stocked pump up gun that makes full power at 8 pumps.

At 1 pump I use it to knock bee hives off of the house with no wood penetration or dinging. At 8 pumps I have killed racoons and done away with more than a couple chipmunks.

The gun was just over 100$ about 15 years ago and is a fine rifle with no trouble. The same gun is available in different calibers and I would be inclined to get either a .177 or 0.22 due to pelelt availability.

This variable power feature allows you to adjust the sting.

Interesting, at 8 pumps what would you say the maximum range and trajectory would be? Would I be lobbing the pellet out there? I had a Crosman pump rifle when I was younger too but it was really weak. I suspect things may have gotten better these days.

I got a German Dynomite Nobel RWS Model 34 about 15 years ago from a friend in Austria. It is .177 caliber @1,100 feet per second and has a Leopold 28mm 2-7X scope on it.

It does great on Bayer asprins on a log at 25 yards and Lincoln pennies at 50 yards, turning the asprins into white dust and putting a nice hole in the pennies.

Eyeshots on squirrel heads are a piece of cake.

I like it much better than subsonic .22s as it is much more devastating on varmits with massive tissue destruction. The hollowpoint .177 pellets are awesome.

If you want the absolute best airgun, get a Feinwerkbau, they are supreme!

As far as effective range, well I have popped crows on tree tops in the 70 yard range. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I swear they're laughing at me at 6 am, caah caah. The crow tumbles down through the branches and then every crow from a mile around comes to mourn. What a sight that is.

Seems that I recall a 850 fps number but the spec is certainly available online. I'll have to look.

Even a .22 rimfire needs a little trajectory correction out at 100 yards so the best case pellet gun at 100 yards will take a little finesse unless you sight it in that way.

Looks like 700 fps and 137$. Dang nice gun though. )

Neat looking gun but strange caliber pellet. Kind of forces you into their brand.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to see what the local BiMart store stocks today(probably will go with something that is failry common) and then I'll make my decision.

I noticed this Gamo gun (with lots of geeky toy features):
Gamo Varmint Stalker

Always wanted a "geek gun" with a laser sight. Maybe I'll splurge on this toy.

Thanks again, as always the TBN is a great source of information from a lot of people with similar lifestyles.

Hi,
I bought one through Cabela's a few years ago . It has the 12 power scope . That thing is deadly ! I can drill a 2" circle target at 100 feet . At 15 to 20 feet it will shatter a penny into pieces .I never tried to kill anything with it ,but I bet I would do some serious damage at 75 feet or less . They are not cheap ,but I think they are very well built with excellent target shooting ability . Depending on the type of pellet you use ,it will go through 3/4 " wood at close range.
