Alright, I bought a Crosman 1000 FPS Break Action Rifle yesterday for $80 at the local BiMart (local discount chain). They had them on sale for 10% off so it was an easy impulse buy.

After a quick few shots I can say that it is louder than a Ruger 10/22, seems really powerful, and I need to dial in the sights. Hopefully, it proves to be reasonable accurate. I have to go on a trip until the weekend so I won't have more time to play with it until next week.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Louder than the Ruger? I also have a 10/22 that get's used when noise is not liable to attract the wrong kind of attention.

Sounds like you found a winner.

I also have a 5mm blue streak. Great little gun had it for over 25 years, still going strong. Works great on possums and coons, had to body bag a few lately for getting into my trash. And yes I have to get my local gun shop to special order the pellets for me, but 500 of them last a long time. I like the adjustability of it too, just burn or kill. Will go thru 3/8 plywood, maybe 1/2.

The old .22 cal benjamin pump rifles are great as well, had one of those years ago.

Sheridan used to offer their guns in .30 cal !! Never tried one of those though.

I have heard that pellets may not be available at walmart. The 500 pack that I bought many years ago from Big5 is still mostly full.

There is a 0.25 caliber available. I think they call it the crow magnum.

When you hold the sheridan walnut stocked rifle it is a much higher quality piece than say a crossman BB gun. The sheridan has heft not unlike the ruger.

I zapped a coon in the belly about 3 weeks ago while he was trying to get the cat food. Dang urban wildlife.

I don't mine leaving a pump up pellet gun sitting around the house with my 2 year old but the real guns get locked up.

I love guns, love shooting, but come on... shooting a deer with a pellet gun? That's inhumane. If you must, do some tests to see what type of penetration you get at those distances.

How about a slingshot? Those ball bearings ought to sting like ****. It'll take some skill, too. Paintall guns aren't that accurate, but will make a racket that they'll associate with danger. Even a small potato gun would be better.

Highbeam,
I get head shots on the coons from 50-100 ft and they just drop and quiver for 15 sec or so. Possums are a bit harder to kill, more primative critter I suppose.

On the deer, I would go with the paintball gun, that way you can tell if it is a repeat offender as well /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I don't enjoy killing critters, but I sure hate to just wound one and have it die slowly from an infection or peridonitis or somesuch.

Zio- Nobody is trying to kill or injure the deer. This thread is all about zapping them to hurt their pride and scare the snot out of them. Just like a good sling shot will do. A pellet gun is obviously not a deer hunting rifle, never will be in my book.

You bet. I don't think anyone here has bad intentions. I think maybe the point was missed, however, that the pellet gun could very likely puncture the skin.

I don't have a problem with stinging the crap out of them. I have a few raccoons & cats that I nail with a little daisy bb gun when they get into the dog food. That thing won't hardly dent a coke can.

Now, I gotta find my potato gun. I think with a smaller barrel & some grapes, I can have a little more fun around the property

A pellet rifle shoud never be used on a deer, dog, or other animal to scare them, that is inhumane and criminal.

My RWS 34 will shoot through both sides of a steel trashcan or completely through your hand without a problem, that is not something used to "scare" an animal.

Geez, talk about impulse buys ... just browsed July's American Rifleman ... they had an article on the Gamo/NRA 1000 Special Edition. Looked neat! Just ordered one ... no idea why ... well, it looked neat and some part of the sale is supposed to go to the NRA Foundation. ... Can't wait to see if this BAMF will shoot clean thru my hand /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
