10K Deck over tilt or with ramps

It’s not awkward with a tongue weight scale and they cost under $200. I have one and I can dial in my weight perfect. No screwing around with bathroom scales.

I’d like to see the average joe come up with an accurate weight doing that method. It’s stupid and a recipe for disaster IMO. It is possible to do right but go look at another thread on here if you think people are even remotely smart enough to do that. Heck I know adults that can’t figure the area of a rectangle. At least go to a real scale if you want to cut your loading that close. Even if you are capable of doing the bathroom scale method you are still assuming the scale is accurate which it probably isn’t and you’re using the jack weight which is more than the hitch weight.

I would just invest in a Weigh Safe hitch if I was in the market for a new hitch, just wish they had a higher load rating on the 2.5" shank

This is what I have and will use if needed. Keep in mind the scale is hydraulic so reads most accurate around 50% capacity. I have a few different gauges depending on load. But only really bust it out if the load on the trailer is over 7k lbs. I’ve never tried the bathroom scale because it looks like a pain in the ***

Anything heavy enough to measure the tongue weight is probably going to require a weight distributing setup anyway, so the weigh safe hitch might not be the best bet.

I know that I am in the minority, but I don't care to deal with a gooseneck trailer. At least at this point in my life anyway. If I retire, move out to an 80 acre ranch in a very rural area, and have unlimited time and space to deal with the gooseneck, there may be a chance I'd look for another. I did own one for about 4 months, then replaced it with a bumper pull. For me the gooseneck has far more drawbacks than any perceived niceness while driving straight down the road. The deck over is the only way to go because of the unlimited cargo loading options. For me, a 22' 14k PJ hydraulic tilt is the most versatile. 20180320_142810.jpeg

So what is the downsides of a GN other than the fact they trail a little wider?

Pain in the *** to hook up with a p/u bed, you have to crawl under/in/around.

Towing. No downside

Convenience focusing on use of truck. Inconvenient. If towing was an integral part of my business I’d probably run a gooseneck. But I need a rack on my truck and the use of the bed more than I need a gooseneck.

My Son taught me a great trick. Don't jack up the trailer enough to completely clear the ball. So when you rehook you align yourself with the trailer and back until you feel the hitch jump over the ball and stop. Piece of cake.

Gooseneck downsides.

The pick I posted is with a dealer owned loaner 1500, no gooseneck hitch.

Can't be used unless there is a similarly equipped 2500 nearby. I live just outside of flint assembly, so you'd think it would be easy to find one when I'd like to haul some cargo? Nope.

Can't really carry any cargo in the bed while towing unless it is very secure in the front two feet of bed, the most inaccessible.

It's a pain to hookup just to move around the lot, and I have a camera on the center high mount brake light.

Can't easily move a GN with a CUT three point, too heavy and near zero visibility backing up.

I don't care for all of the extra area that is required to back into a tight spot. The front end of a crew cab 2500 takes a lot of swinging around to get the GN trailer where you want it. The pivot point being five feet in front of a hitch ball requires a lot more moving around of the front end to get the trailer where it needs to go. So what if you can jack knife it when it requires more room to straighten it back out?

But a 5th wheel is much easier.

If your having a good day no need to exit the truck to actually Hitch the truck trailer up
except to hook up wiring, lock the latch and lift the jack.

Yeah I know- it eats the center of the bed when not hauling a trailer- unless you remove that Big Heavy and Greasy HD 5ver mount...

Great Now i got grease all over my new khakis - and I was having such a good day:laughing:
