Got the baler out and figured that we would go without a problem and it won't tie a knot, the needles even lose the baling twine some how...we have just been running it through the cycle by hand with no hay in the baler, don't understand it was working fine when we stopped haying last year...:confused2:

There are many variables that have to be right for a knotter to tie. If you can get your hands on a manual, any manual for a baler will be very helpful to you as all knotters work the same. Without more detailed information it is impossible to help you diagnose a problem.

Back the tractor RPM'S down and go slow.

Are the needles not carrying the twine, or are is the twine making it into the knotter but not tying?

Need lots more info and perhaps a few pics of the knotter/duckbills/needles etc....

That is one of the best videos of knotters out there. It has been around for a long long time, but never saw it on youtube before.

Is the twine making it into the twine disc? Make sure your needle is adjust so that it just clears the twine disc, about 1/32-1/64 of an inch clearance. Let us know if this is happening and we can tell you where to go from there.

If needles are losing twine then twine disc isn't holding the tail of the twine or twine is breaking allowing twine to come out of the eye of the needle.

In a nut shell ! JD etc knotters work exactly the same. Watch in 420P

That's an excellent video. It's too bad JD doesn't have a video similar to that one. Granted all sq baler knotters are very similar in operation.

All are the same. Paint it green and you have a JD knotter.

I think the trip dog, measuring wheel arm and needle brake setup's are different between brands IE won't interchange but I have more experience with wire balers than twine. I know the hay dogs are different between brands and hay dogs are technically part of knotter system because without them no tying would take place.

The function of the knotter is the same, granted that parts are not interchangable.:confused2:

Not quite, there are two type of knotters, just happens JD and NH use similar. The older MF style are completely different.

Are you engaging pto at idle or wide open throttle?

Has it ever worked for you ?

Are you using JD shear pins or just ordinary nuts and bolts ?

What are you trying to bale ?

Have you checked the timing as your manual describes ?

Can you turn it over by hand for several flywheel revs or does it stall at some point ?

That is where you start...

It has baled before but the shear pin always breaks and it will keep turning so I turned it by hand and it'll turn just fine for half a turn then I gotta put some stank on it

I'll bet the slip clutch is frozen. The slip clutch(parts key 19 A or 19 B) is supposed to slip a tiny bit with every plunger head stroke when there's hay in the chamber. I was having flywheel shear bolt shearing problems on my 347 and I checked & slip clutch was frozen. Feed up SC no more sheared bolts.

The bolt in the flywheel, as I have heard it described, is not necessarily a shear pin, but a "friction" bolt... tighten it and the two faces, the flywheel and the "ear" are put into a pressure position where the interface friction is what keeps the flywheel turning... My bolt loosens so I have to re-tighten it to keep the friction faces in pressure..... I hope that makes sense.... It's hard to describe....
