Tractor
Massey Ferguson 1533/1525
Can anyone suggest what size bush hog/rotary cutter I should use with this tractor? I won't be doing any heavy mowing, mostly cleaning up pasture behind livestock.

Thanks.

Use a 5' mower, it will fit your tractor best.

I have a 1433v, the previous model. Check my post "1433v Questions", just a few before this post, for good advice on choosing implements. spb1971 is correct on the 5' size. Welcome to TBN!

Some suggest a size larger than that but a 5' is by far the best size for your tractor.

I thought the 5' would be the best as well. However, the dealer suggested a 6' cutter, saying that the tractor can more than handle it in light cutting and that with R4 tires, a 5' mower won't even cover the tractor width. More thoughts?

That is the question. How light do you want to cut? I know if I have to cut grass that was no more than a foot high, I wouldn't like it. Not saying that it wouldn't cut grass more than a foot high, but just using that as an example of what he might be referring to as light. When I go cutting, I want to know that no matter what I want to cut that I can do it. For the life of me, I can't understand why the dealers are all ordering industrial tires. Unless it is to make the tractors look bigger or tougher. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I do understand why some customers need to use them, but can't understand why almost all dealers order them only.

The dealer where I got mine said that most people he sold to did not want Ag tires because of damaging the lawn, but wanted more traction than turf tires. I wanted Ag tires but did not want to spend the money to change them out.

Lawn damage is one of the things that I understand. I can also understand them being used where a large part of the use is on hard surfaces such as concrete etc.

I would think the 1533 would handle a 6' bushhog, with the greatest problem being the weight of the cutter rather than the tractor HP.
Bushhog's website recommends 30-40HP for their light duty 6' model, but 40HP minimum for the medium duty 286 model. If you get into really heavy cutting you may have to gear down, but I believe it'll cut OK. However, you may have to use your brakes to steer at times if you go with the 286 or one of that weight. Just my opinion, but I would go with one that covered my tracks. Good luck.

With this statement , It makes me ask is a 1533 & a 1433 the same width ? Because my 1433 is right at 60" outside to outside of the tires or very close... which would cover my tracks with a 5' hog...
To be honest when I hog I have used my 135 with 38hp and when cutting stuff as high as the hood there is enough power to run right through anything in its path with my 5' hog , I haven't as of yet tried my 1433 with the hog...

The 135 is wider than the 1433 by about 10" or so and It hasn't made any real difference with it not covering the full width of the tracks even when I was just doing an open field(thats just me though), But I see your point about covering the full width of the tractor...

I guess the main concern is really about the full use of the hog, If at any time in your future you can see the possibility of cutting heavy brush or saplings I would IMO go with the 5' , but if you know you only be cutting an open field with no real heavy brush I would think a 6' hog would work as well ... That is your decision .

Nasty,
He indicated earllier that with the R4's the 5' was narrower than the tractor. This would be a problem for me trying to cut next to fencerows, etc., as well as being able to cut a 6' width vs 5'. I believe in the first post he said he would be clipping pasture for livestock? A light front end will be more problem than power to run the cutter. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, it's a very tough problem. The tractor is 62" plus whatever added width of the industrial tires. I think the 5' mower would be the better all purpose mower but the added width of the 6' and the ability to cover my tracks and get next to fences is a real plus. The tractor has a FEL so the front end weight is there if necessary. My use is on pasture, so I shouldn't be mowing any tall hay, brush, or saplings. That said, I could always contradict myself and say it'd be nice to have the option, however.

Here is my thoughts… I have a 1533 with a 72” mower and it has no problem cutting my pasture grass here in Florida at low range 4th gear (high range, 1st gear tops). I have done some brush cutting with it and no problem there as well. I to wanted the bigger mower because of my fencing, but guess what? Get the “I need a 72” mower to get close to my fence”, out of the reasons to get a 72” mower, it still will NOT cut next to your fence, trust me on that. The mower is only about 5” wider (I think even less) on both sides of the tractor, it seems to be allot to get up to a fence rail, but it isn’t, you still can’t get up to the fence… In any case, go for the bigger mower for the reason of making less passes and not for getting next to something. It has been side here all over the place, you can make a bigger mower smaller, but you can’t make a small mower bigger.

72" weight... Not a problem. I have cut grass without the loader and no problems. Yes, I have had the mower all the way up on the 3point with no front end lift.

Last thought on the mower… If the 1533 that we are talking about is a hydro, forget about the 72” mower and go with the 60’, the hydro doesn’t have the HP to turn a 72” IMO.

About the 1433v and 1533 width… I am not sure what one is wider or not, but the 1533 comes with the adjustable wheels (remove from hub and make them wider)… Isn’t the 1433v wheels a solid wheel? If that is the case I think the rear track would be wider on the 1533 then the 1433v right from the start because of the wheels the 1533 comes with.

EDIT... Forgot to say I have the R-4s... Also here is the best pics I have right now with the mower on, again it looks as if you can get next to fenceing, I still have to use my riding mower. Remember the blade sits back a bit from the side of the mower.

(note the grass the tractor is sitting on in this pic is done by a riding mower not the brush cutter)

I measured my 1433v today to decide what size Bush Hog to get. I have R4's and I measured 60 1/2 inches outside to outside on the rear tires. I will get a 5ft because I plan on doing some heavy cutting.
