Has anyone had a problem with the 2 1/2 inch bolts that hold the pump onto the motor breaking? My one bolt broke sometime and it is broke off about 1/8th inside where it fastens onto the yoke that is fastened onto the motor. Talked to Terry about it and it sounds like I have to remove fuel tank, battery , hydr. filter and some hoses to get to where bolt is broken. Started last night to remove other bolt holding pump on and found that it was also broken but some of the threads were still in the yoke and holding pump. Will get to it when it cools off. What would cause this?

It sounds like a alignment issue. If the pump isnt true to the motor it can create a bad vibration, it can also be from being from out of balance. The pump has to be very close to true vertically, horizontally and also centered . Look closely at the love joy couplers and the star in between for irregular wear. If there is irregular wear i would take pics and e- mail Terry to get his opinion. I would eliminate the possibility of alignment , being the quickest and easiest first, then look elsewhere if you cant find anything there. Also check the faces where the bolts that broke mate to the surfaces of the pump and mount and see if there are signs of wear from the bolts possibly being loose. Inspect the shoulders of the pump where it rests in the housing and see if it looks like it has alot of wear. If so the bolts could have not been tight enough. If the bolts werent tight or worked themselves loose it could cause them to break as well. You have to be a detective and look for the signs of the problem that would cause the bolts to break.
If possible take pics and post, it may help to get some more information out there for someone to see and recognize the issue from their past experiences and give you the solution to your problem quick lying

Fatigue. I don't know the age of your 1845, but my VDP, with accessory pumps, are attached to a plate that is then attached to the engine. All this weight is carried by just two 1/2" bolts connecting the VDP to the plate. Given the vibration of the diesel engine, that's way too much stress for just two fasteners connected to threaded holes in the plate (no nuts on the rear). I thought about "fixing" the design, but it's been holding up for years so far.

When you put the bolts back, don't be tempted to go with grade 8. Stick to grade 5, as grade 8 would be more brittle in this application.

My 1845 is I believe a 1995 build with about 3,200 hours on it not sure of the hours as I am not the original owner and the hour gauge might not be accurate. I had the timing belt replaced on it last fall and they also did the head gasket but I don't think either of those would affect this.

I would suspect not as well. Does yours get trailered much?

All the best,

Peter

Only been trailered 4 times that I know of , when I first purchased it, once to Tazwell and back, and 2 times to the tractor dealer that did the head gasket and timing belt.
