Roger that. Thanks souNdguy, all good stuff there, I'll report back with pics to help out the next newb in line :)

*EDIT* Thought y'all'd enjoy a pic of our "B" and the beautiful Lady who I'm surprising with this '641. Pic was taken in August of 2011 just as Hurricane Irene was coming up through our little part of Connecticut.

Lol thanks. Still see remnants of the original screening on the hood. No bondo on that tractor that's for sure. Wifey digs it, insisted it be there for the party we were having that day.

So, FINALLY was able to make my way back up to the 641 for a few hours this morning.

Flushed, drained & filled the crankcase and the hydraulic section. Ran out of time so I'll get to the transmission and differential next go round.

Pulled the sparkplugs, ran a compression test and installed new, hotter range NGK's.

All the plugs looked the same, well maybe the front plug looked a little bit wet.

Compression was OK I thought, but what do I know. From the rear cylinder to the front read: 135#, 125#, 130# & 135#

Engine had been running maybe 15 minutes before I pulled the plugs and ran the test.

Rotella 15W40, came away with decent oil pressure I thought. Changed out the cartridge oil filter before flush and again after.

Dave found the thread-in PTO cover which I thought was pretty cool.

3-point works like a charm now, looking forward to going back up and hanging that bush hog off it to see how it does.

Here's some pics:

By the by, man this engine runs smooth and doesn't smoke that I can tell. At an idle and up just a little she's got a little miss, thinking points condensor cap rotor and wires are the next step if only because I don't know how long these have been on there.

Would rather not go to tractor supply or some other generic joint, what's the consensus on a source for better quality stuff?

Kool. Napa should have everything you need. My friend bought boxes of NOS points and stuff from a closed dealership so I haven't been to napa for a while Seeing how you don't get up to the tractor that often if you going to change the tranny/hyd/rear fluid, before runny it, crack the drain plug a couple of threads and any water will drain out first than the oil will flow. Once it has run it will mix and will be harder to get the water out without a good cleaning and any water after it's run will contaminate the new oil.

Thanks Kirk, I'll give NAPA a go. Guessing the Blue Streak (?) line of "Standard" ignition parts is the better quality from what I remember.

Got the Hydraulic squared-away yesterday, fortunately there wasn't any water laying in there. Xmission and Diff will be next, am curious to see how they both look.

normally you do a dry / wet compression test to see how valves compare to rings.. however if your numbers are dry alone.. they are fine.

For napa parts.. here's an excerpt from my napa parts list. these ignition components fit 51-64 side mount N and red tiger engines.

Side-Mount Distributor:
Points:
NAPA #CS749
NAPA HEAVY DUTY PIERCED (ventilated) #CS753

Standard Ignition #FD-75
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD75X (Premium)
Rotor:
NAPA #FA67
Standard Ignition #FD-108
Distributor Cap:
NAPA #FA352
Standard Ignition #FD-128
6 volt coil IC7 ($48)
6 volt voltage regulator VR950
6 volt coil IC7SB ($23)
12 volt coil, no resistor needed: IC14SB

Thanks SG, I actually saw your list over on Yesterdays Tractor last night hahaha

Wondering why there's no reference to a blue streak cap or rotor, only points and condensor? I'll try to get up to NAPA later this week and see what they have in that book, and report back.

points you can get as heavy duty / ventilated/pierced or regular duty.

with the cap and rotor.. there's just not much you need other than for it to fit and the posts to be in the correct places...

Right on. Some differences you can feel. The cap on my WICO AP mag is OEM from the 40's on my JD B, and man that thing weighs double what junk I can find at the shows today. I'd just rather spend a couple extra bucks up front and not have to deal with the inconvenience later, you know? If it's an option, that is...
