I checked the plug wires and they ohmed out good. AutoZone had a replacement for the bad one with the same ends that I just tried, but no joy. The wires, even the OEM ones don't seem to fit well into the distributor. Is there some kind of trick to getting them to seat well?

Forgive my ignorance here, but believe it or not, I was watching Alaska The Last Frontier with my wife and she said look honey, Otto is pushing a button you aren't pushing. It's next to the shifter and it had a white wire coming out. The headlights also have a white wire so when I was figuring things out, I thought it was a light switch. But upon a closer inspection, the wire goes to the coil. Can you guys enlighten me here, I guess I'm missing a lot here.

Its called a neutral safety switch. All the older Ford Machines have or should have there have been lots of them bypassed over the years can cause a real safety concern for an inexperienced operator.

Does it have to be pressed during start up?

Yes it does unless the entire system has be reworked to another starting system.

This is my first post. The Ford 2000, 3000, 2600, 3600 are fairly common in terms of operation. As another rookie tractor operator, I recommend that you get your hands on the owners manual for any of those models to get familiar with the controls before you operate. My 3600 has a pin to lock the left and right brake pedals together so the L&R braking force is applied in unison. Once you gain more hours in the seat, you can learn to use the pedals independently and you will marvel at by which you can tap a spinning rear tire with the brake and the other tire pulls you out of the muck or make a short radius turn. My tractor has a T shaped pull that locks the foot brake for parking. You should make sure you understand the brakes before you service or use your tractor. Open the hood and check the wiring between the fuel tank and battery to make sure the wiring is still insulated. This has caused this model family to catch fire. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Mark sure you have oil and coolant. Service your battery so you get good spark. Drain your gas and put fresh gas in it. Drain carb float into clear container and look for water. Check for spark: remove spark plug, stick SP in the SP wire and ground the threaded part on any bare metal away from the spark plug hole. Crank engine. Avoid the gas laden vapor coming out of the now open SP hole. You might need a helper for this and it helps to do it in low light. You should see a spark. Do it on every plug. Clean each SP with a brass wire brush and gap them while you have them out. Service your battery so you get good spark. Choke on & no throttle or Choke off & open throttle. Mark sure you have oil and coolant. If still no joy, check your points.

UGH.. that's the original neutral safety start switch.

I really, really, really suggest you hack every wire off that tractor and just start over.

troubleshooting a birds nest, coupled with someone not familiar with tractors or fords is making this drag out.

originally that thumb switch would have had a wire that goes to one small terminal of a 4 terminal solenoid, the other small terminal going to the key. then one large term to bat hot, one large term to starter.

a wire to the coil from the same side of the key as the wire to the solenoid.

the other side of the key ( it only has 2 wires ) goes to battery hot.

that right there is all you need to make the tractor start and run.

to get it to charge.. I'd need to know alt or generator.

Yea, it's been a nightmare buzzing out every wire, finding rusty contacts, etc. It has an alternator by the way.
