Make sure your coveralls have no holes!

Nothing like carrying ground clamp and electrode and having said electrode find the hole in your coveralls to touch your sweaty skin while the welder is powered up...

surface preparation is half of the result.

(that means either removal of rust, paint or tar on the surface, but sometimes also cutting a Vee for proper penetration. I allways try to grind a V before, then weld with a flat surface. Cutting a V is easier than grinding a bead flat. And it isnt really helpful if, especially with light welders on heavy steel, you put a bead on top and then grind it down again...
