The best thing to do is to go to your local DMV/driver's license center and get a CDL handbook and a US DOT "trucker's handbook". It's loaded with valuable info.

All you'll get by inquiring on a website is confused. :D

It is all ridiculously complicated- there needs to be some reform to make it understandable.
I've asked in other threads/other sites and never got a verifiable answer- NC requires a class A license to haul a trailer over 10k. I'm a SC resident but frequently haul in NC with a trailer at 14k, total scaled weight of truck and trailer around 23.5k, but I'm non-commercial, which in NC, one still needs the class A.
I don't know whether I'm in violation in NC or not- here is the twist SC doesn't have a Class A even if I wanted one:cool:

I think your sources may be innacurrate. My guess is that NC laws are the same as most other states and that a 10K + trailer doesn't require a CDL until the combo truck & trailer goes over 26K and the trailer is over 10,001 lbs.

Why not just call NC DMV instead of asking people who probably don't know the right answer.

Builder is right. Just think about it. That would mean every retired couple with a diesel truck and a 5th wheel trailer would need a cdl. That would kill the sales. And actually there is a stipulation in most states that let you go over 26k if its a recreational vehicle. I know its stupid but I am sure the camper manufactures have friends who made sure this was on the books. If not it would kill the sales of the motorhomes and large travel trailers.

builder and diamondpilot-- I never said anything about a CDL.:D

A class A license is required in NC , it is not a CDL, but there is also a class A CDL. It also isn't a regular drivers license which is class C

Direct from NC DMV site- NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles: Driver Handbook: Chapter 1

Class A: Required to operate any combination of vehicles exempt from commercial driver license (CDL) requirements with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is greater than 10,000 pounds. Also required for operating any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds, if the vehicle being towed has a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds.

Class B: Required to operate any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more that is exempt from CDL requirements, and any such vehicle while towing another vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less.

Class C: Required to operate any vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds that is exempt from CDL requirements and is not towing a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds. Most drivers need only a Regular C license to operate personal automobiles and small trucks.

So with my given example of my trailer at 14k but total under 26,001 I would need a class A if I was a NC resident with an NC driver's license, but since I'm a SC resident with an SC license I don't....I think:cool:

After reading the Class A business I have to say I stand corrected. I have never seen any law like that in my parts. I live on a small road with only 10 houses. Of the 10 families 7 of us have trailers over 12,000# up to 18,000#. We would all be in trouble with your officials. We only have one class of drivers license here then you go to CDL.

Wow, just gets more complicated state to state going to DMV Monday. Good news is I need a trailer soon. Local kayak shop needs me to scape their parking lot and mow about 3 acres for them this season. I do not have a business yet so I am going to help a friend out for a month or so untill I get what ever the **** I will need in TN to legally tow my rig. I am unsure what to charge them for maintain their property, just getting in business. Small gravel /drive parking lot, 1/2 acre of their 3 is steep and a bit of weed eating. What would you charge? Looking at 2 trailers 18' 12K Big Tex pipe trailer or 24' 14k Horton Hauler, which and why? Looks like I will buy one soon if some one is going to pay me to come use tractor, esp for a possible long term client.
THANKS!
Eric

OK, you tricked us. When I read "class A" and were talking about commercial licenses & such, I figure you mean class A CDL. :p
