2 cyl diesels???????

I love my 2 cylinder Yanmar. Yes, its a thumper.

I think that's what a tractor *should* sound like. Its harvest season now and I hear the old tractors in the area brought out to work, chugging around in the orchards. This thing sounds like all that old American iron, not like a forklift or something.

There's something aesthetically correct in a machine that runs flawlessly and is as simple as can be made.

If you're asking are there any problems inherent in this configuration - I don't think so.

My Mitsubishi has a pretty good ring to it when it's cold, but quiets down when it warms up. There is some vibration, but not as much as on a Harley Davidson. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's funny! I was staring at the 2cyl diesel in my Kubota BX1500 yesterday thinking it would make a darn good engine for a motorcycle - especially if you took that large counterweight off the top. It is small (599cc) and makes an OK amount of power for an around-town-only motorcyle, like an Enfield.

IMO, no way is it close to the 'big old' diesels. The size of the pistons in those two-cyl diesels and the yanmar, along with the rpm isn't 'close' (again, IMO). The two-cyl yanmar has the higher rpm of the two-cyl small upright engines that Deere put in the M's, 40's, and 420's series. Each to their own recollection though. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I wasn't compairing engine specs.. or anything 'technical' in nature.. only the similar sound pattern. The JD makes a distinct throaty pop-pop The yanmar.. though higher in pitch.. still exhibits pattern of two back to back sounds.. kinda like a chug-chug...

The Yanmar chug-chug sound:

On an inline twin cylinder designed for one piston down while the other is up, they fire 180 degrees apart then nothing for another 540 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

This 'trademark' sound is immediately noticeable, and different from most other engines which can be arranged to fire at even intervals.

The first time I noticed this was when the first Honda motorcycles arrived, 250 and 305 cc side by side twins. They sounded completely different from how everyone thought a motorcycle 'should' sound.

If your talking about an old JD diesel two-cylinder, then you are correct. An old JD gas two-cylinder with electric start would be easier to start - it only has to hit on one cylinder! My gas model 70 is by far the easiest starting tractor/piece of machinery I've ever had or encountered. Turn ignition on, bump throttle forward a hair, step on the starter switch and it's a poppin'. It really does sound neat to hear a 379.5 cubic inch two-cylinder motor under load... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Though, my dads Kubota wins in the luxury/smoothines/ease of use category. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The only tractor my oncle had for many years for his dairy farm was a 1969 Renault 2 cyl. 30HP (I don't know the model). It's sound was unique in the village (tuck-tuck-tuck-tuck...)

Never head an old 2 cylinder JD 70 run, but it is anything like my 60, ........ How about the old diesel "R" model..... that was said to have some HP back then....for a 2 cylinder. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
