I bought a couple of CaseIH planter heads from my farmer uncle last week and I spent half the night cutting and welding but got them finished. Man were these things cumbersome to stand up to get them bolted to the tool bar. I put some seed corn in the hoppers this morning and tried them out in the front yard and they actually worked. Unfortunately I will now be mowing some corn in my front yard. Picture attached.

I was wondering what your row spacing is.. seems like most small planter rows are always in line w/ the CUT'S tires.. I have this problem w/ my JD 2 row & TC35D.

My rows are set at 36". Why? That was just the way it worked out when I was putting it together with what steel I had on hand and the 3 pt hitch that I already had.

Nice job. Your JD should straddle a single row. BTW, just how much corn are you intending to plant? w jones

About 5-6 acres

I read in your other post that you might decide to start selling these. Any estimates on what you might charge?

If I can get more I may try to build some to sell. I would say for a 2 row similar to what you see in my pictures $600.

How are you going to harvest? Most corn heads on combines have 30 inch row spacing. I have access to some old JD row units that I was thinking of doing the same thing.

I figured we would harvest via "The Little House on the Prairie" method.

I've got my Dad's corn knife from when he was young and they picked by hand ... man - I don't want anything to do with that! They don't make gloves thick enough to prevent blisters when using that thing. - 'course he said gloves slowed ya down - he also had a corn shuckin' glove that had a hook knife sewed into it - cut the ear off with your right hand and shuck with your left ?? dunno ... don't wanna know.

The reason I was asking is because I have a problem w/ my JD planter's rows being directly in line w/ the tires. So if I go to use a 2 row cultivatar.. I'm driving over the corn. I'm going to try and adjust the width of the planting rows to fit w/in the width of the tires. The rows would be considered "narrow" or "double" rows.

Hard work, but I enjoy that. Also you may wanta consider pickled baby corn if your selling or for personal use (I love that stuff)

Just a thot.

My Dad told me that goin' to school was a valid excuse for not shuckin' corn. Sleepin' and eatin' were NOT! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Sounds good but I can't find any of those little handles that are small enough that you stick in the ends of the cobb. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK enough of my foolishness. I am growing this corn for feed for my goats. I always buy corn and mixed feed for my goats to feed along with hay in the winter time. To be honest a lot of the reason is nostalgia. I have two little girls, one will be 7 this month and the other is 3 and 1/2. Instead of cartoons and computers, I would like them to see other things in life like farm stuff. They love tractors and animals so growing a small field of corn will be something I think they will enjoy especially if I am doing most of the work.
